Holiday cheer on parade
By CARLOS VILLATORO, Register Staff Writer
Anyone who pouts or cries had better watch out -- Santa Claus is coming to town today to usher in Napa's 44th annual Christmas Parade.
The parade is a tradition in Napa signaling the coming holiday and spreads a bit of holiday cheer. Fifty or more floats are scheduled to participate in this year's parade, said Craig Smith, executive director of Napa Downtown Association.
Under the theme of "The Season of Giving in the Wine Country," Smith said, this year's parade follows a new route.
"Well, traditionally it's gone down First Street, across Main and up on Second (Street)," he said. "This year it's going to Copia."
The parade begins on First Street at School Street, crosses Soscol Avenue and ends at Copia. Why the change?
"This year, Copia has graciously opened its front doors and we are going to have Santa at Copia," Smith said. "There will be a tree lighting indoors (and) they are going to pass out hot chocolate. It's probably the most Christmas-y spot that we've ever had."
Spectators bundle up in warm clothing and usually line the streets of Napa an hour or more before the start of the parade. Smith said that pre-parade entertainment will get things warmed up for the main event of the evening.
"This is a hokey, hometown parade and I mean that in a real warm sense," Smith said.
Entertainment begins at 4 p.m., followed by the parade at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to continue the Christmas fun at Copia with free admission.
