The apparent suicide of an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer Wednesday remains under investigation, Napa Police reported Thursday.

CHP Officer Mark Mirabel, 40, was found dead from a gunshot wound in his Dodge Durango SUV in the parking lot of the CHP office on Golden Gate Drive at around 3:15 p.m., according to Napa Police.
At this point, there is no sign of foul play, Jeff Troendly said Thursday.

CHP Officer Jerry Rico said Mirabel had been a CHP officer for about four years, all in Napa.
Mirabel, who lived in American Canyon, was a patrol officer, Rico said. He was married with a 4-year-old daughter, Rico said.

"He was a good officer," Rico also said Thursday. "He did his job. He was just a young officer, well liked by his (fellow) officers."
Forty officers are assigned to the Napa office, according to the CHP.

The CHP district office, which was closed Thursday because of Thanksgiving, will reopen Friday, Rico said.

"The office will be running as normal as it can under the circumstances," Rico said.

Counselors have been brought in for the personnel and the family, Rico also said. Officers will return to work as they can and CHP officers from other areas will be probably brought over the next few days, Rico also said.

" What happened to your policy of not reporting on suicides? As I remember, that was the reason given for not covering the death of the homeless man a few months ago. Now it is on the front page. How is the report of Officer Maribel's death different? "

Jess wrote on Nov 24, 2006 10:13 AM:

" Joyce...I think you are missing the point entirely! Both incidents are tragic! We still don't know what caused the homeless man's death. It doesn't make that any less news worthy. There are still unaswered questions as to the officer's tragic death. What caused him to committ suicide if that was his choosing. However I'm also getting tired because some homeless person just as much didn't seek help and may...and may I say again...choose his lifestyle to be this way! No one chooses to be homeless! No one chooses suicide either! Both have to make intellegent choices. Let's not forget that! "

" My family's condolencese to the family of Offiver Maribel. Thank God for those who volunteer to uphold our laws as law enforcement officers! Jess: I have heard people say that in fact they HAVE choosen to be homeless; your statement is therefore flawed; there ARE people who DO choose suicide as well. Where ARE you getting your insights? "

" I thoughts and prayers go out to the Maribel family. I don't care the title of a man, he is still human and he is someone's father, brother, uncle who knows. We need to pay close attention to our loved ones and listen to the signs if there are any! I have a son that is a CHP and I know that they offer a lot of support to their fellow officers. They can talk to someone at anytime and they will give you as much time off as needed! "

" Joyce, how come a homeless man gets treated different at a restaurant, grocery store, church, school yard, park, mall, beauty salon, tire store, toy store, car lot, hardware store, airport, country club, yact club, fitness gym, and so on? Could it be because they smell badly, look scary, wear tattered clothing, have horrible looking teeth, are dirty, bath in public restrooms, have no money, have no job, have no vehicle, talk to themselves, and so on. I no that not everyone is the same, but from my observations this is close enough give or take a so on. Someone who has a beneficial role in the community, who is responsible, hard working, clean, orderly, intelligent and so on, is more newsworthy don't you think. The NR can make any excuse they want, but reality is that most people aren't any more concerned with a homeless person then they are for themselves. "

" He was a HERO. In great big letters. That's all his family & peers need to remember right now. That's what YOU need to remember right now. He was a hero. He was one of those rare individual's who actually put themselves between the scary things that go bump in the night & a sometimes ungrateful public. With all the mean, nasty, evil people who like to hide in the dark & do mean, nasty, & evil things. I don't know about you, but I know that there is one less hero in the world today. Whatever or however this happened, I mourn his loss. My sincerest & deepest simpathy go Officer Mark Mirabel's family & to the CHP for their loss. "

Rich Madsen wrote on Nov 27, 2006 3:04 PM:

" Politics should play no part in this tragedy. No matter what reasons were behind this incident, we have lost a law enforcement officer who gave his service to this state. He did walk the line between good and evil, a job most people choose not to do. For those who don't have anything good to say; don't say anything. God bless to Officer Mirabel and his family. "
