Dreamweavers reopens 25-seat ‘Black Box’ with ‘Tuna Christmas’
By Register Staff
Split-second costume changes, live sound effects and side-splitting comedy are on the bill as Napa’s Dreamweavers reopens its intimate Black Box performance space with “A Tuna Christmas,” by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard.
Directed by Louise Anderson, the hilarious sequel to the hit stage comedy “Greater Tuna” opens Dec. 1 for nine weekend performances in the 25-seat black box theater.
Actors June Alane Reif, Rose Marie Sweeney, Victor Davis and Arthur Goulart will portray all two dozen denizens of Texas’ third smallest town, where the Lions Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never died.
As Christmas approaches, radio station OKKK newscasters Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report on various yuletide activities in Tuna, including hot competition in the annual lawn display contest.
In other news, voracious Joe Bob Lipsey’s production of “A Christmas Carol” is jeopardized by unpaid electric bills.
Besides their seemingly never-ending costume changes, the cast must mime nearly all the props and create live sound effects as their characters cope with a comic assortment of seasonal traumas.
“It’s frenetic, but fun,” Anderson said. “I can’t think of a better show to christen Dreamweavers newly reopened Black Box.”
Tickets for “A Tuna Christmas” are by reservation only; the Dec. 2 show and all three Sunday matinees have already sold out.
Dreamweavers is also taking reservations for its costumed reading of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” with three black box performances scheduled for Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 23 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Adult tickets for Dreamweavers shows are $18, $15 for seniors, military and students; children 12 and younger may attend “A Christmas Carol” for $10. Season tickets and five-show passes are not valid for black box performances.
