Art Notes: Holiday dance

Each fall young dancers from Sandy Nugent’s Napa Valley Dance Center begin working on holiday routines that they perform at retirement and nursing homes throughout Napa in December.

This year they will also perform for the public Saturday at Copia at the conclusion of the Napa Downtown Parade. The parade begins at 5 p.m. at Napa City Hall and goes to Copia where Santa will be on hand to greet children. Free glow sticks will be available for children, along with hot chocolate and cookies, after the parade.
The Napa Valley Chorale performs works by Vivaldi and Bach at its holiday concerts Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Jarvis Conservatory in Napa.

Mark Teeters conducts the Chorale for Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” while Jan Lanterman will lead Bach’s Cantata 140 “Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme,” Cantata 172  “Erschallet ihr Lieder” and Cantata 191 “Gloria in Excelsis Deo”
Soloists are Carol Kessler, soprano; Tania Mannion, mezzo soprano; Dan Bishop, tenor and Peter Atherton, bass. Wine and cookies will be served at intermission.

Tickets are $35, and available now by calling 255-5445. The Jarvis Conservatory is at 1711 Main St., Napa.
Trinity Grammar & Prep shows “Pope John Paul II” Saturday at 7 p.m. at the school at 2055 Redwood Road, Napa. The biography stars Jon Voight and Cary Elwes, with a supporting cast that includes Christopher Lee and Ben Gazzara.

The screening is free. Refreshments will be served, and DVD copies of the film will be for sale along with other books and films.

A new show by Lauran Posner opens Saturday at Studio II Gallery in Napa. Posner, a classically trained artist, will show a collection of gelatin silver prints, sabbatier images and hand-colored prints. The show opens with an artist’s presentation at 7 p.m. Saturday, and continues with a reception from 7:30 to 10 p.m. There is no charge for the opening events, but seating is limited for the presentation, so call 257-0900 to reserve at place. Studio II Gallery Napa Valley is at 570 Soscol Ave. Gallery hours are Thursday through Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Posner also presents a two-day workshop demonstrating the art of hand-coloring with oils onto photographic images. For additional information and reservations, call the studio.

The Dec. 2 Holiday Bed and Breakfast tour in Napa will feature holiday decorations and entertainment, as well as food and wine pairings from 3 to 8 p.m. Transportation between the inns will be provided. Tickets are $35 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Purchase tickets in advance at www.historicinns.com. The deadline for advance purchase is Sunday.

The Lisa Clark Dancers of Dance Direction present “Nutcracked,” a comic, jazzed-up version of “The Nutcracker” ballet Dec. 13, 15, 16 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 16 and 17 at 2 p.m. at the Solano College Community Theater,  4000 Suisun Valley Road in Suisun. Tickets are available through the Theater Box Office, 864-7100.
