Crushers dominate Davis Shootout
The Napa Valley Crushers’ 13-under Division 3 girls soccer team walked away from the recent Davis Shootout tournament without a single goal scored against them.
Playing to a nail-biting 0-0 tie at intermission of the championship game, the Crushers sealed their first-place finish with a 2-0 victory over the Vacaville Thunderbirds on Sunday evening.
On Saturday, Napa beat Woodland Velocity 3-0 and Shingle Springs Full Throttle 5-0.
Napa also won Sunday morning’s game over the Davis Legacy Demons, 4-0.
“All of our girls played exceptionally well,” said Crushers coach Mark Bland. “Four shutout games speaks well for our strong defensive players and goalies. And on offense, we had eight different girls score goals.”
Goalie Sarah Mace and newly acquired Alba Mendoza kept all of their foes’ shots on goal out of the net.
Strong defensive play by Kendall Pickett, Samantha Gafvert, Joseline Alejandre and Emily Laskelle cinched the shutouts.
Rachel Reich, Aubry McGee and Leone Baron pulled off intense midfielder strategies and assists.
Several girls scored two tournament goals, including midfielders Montana Upton, Mallory Pridmore and Natalie Campbell, as well as forwards Emily Peterson, Holle DePina and Gianna Huchingson.
Midfielder Bryce Branagan and forward Karlie Mast also scored for the Crushers.
Napa Chaos takes Napa Cup trophies
The Napa Chaos, winners of the 10-under Premier Division of the recent Napa Cup Soccer Tournament, received their trophies at practice on Monday.
The Chaos and Napa Galactics played to a 0-0 draw in regulation of the championship game, but the Chaos earned their trophies with a
3-2 edge in the ensuing shootout competition.
Express softball second in tourney
The Napa Valley Express 12-under softball squad played in the Pacific Challenge Series Oct. 14-15 in Fairfield and finished the season on a good note with a second-place effort.
The Express had a tough time on Saturday, going 0-3 and settling into the No. 7 seed. Napa suffered losses to the Vallejo Hurricanes (11-1), San Jose Lady Sharks (6-1) and California Impact (14-2).
Sunday was a new day for the Express, however.
After Napa spotted the No. 2 seed Cal Breeze a four-run lead after the first inning, the Express fought back to win
5-4.
Later, a see-saw battle between the No. 3 Hurricanes and Express ended in a 6-4 victory for Napa.
The win sent Napa to the tournament title contest.
The championship game against the Lady Sharks ended in a 12-1 loss for the Express, however.
Brittany Jacques (.429 batting average), Alex Ridling (.385) and Eva Gallager (.357) led Napa offensively.
Great defense by Maely Sedlik, Ashlee Sills and Lexi Wagoner helped cement the victories.
Stellar pitching by Jennifer Shubin and Alex Ridling shut down the opposing teams’ bats in the pair of wins.
The Express are coached by Robert Jacques.
