• Napa River

More of the same! Chad Hole at Sweeney’s Sports in Napa (255-5544) said the river is full of fish — and full of anglers.
While I was on the phone he weighed in a 10-pound striper. There have been plenty of 20-pounders in the mix, too. They are hitting almost everything.

Use your favorite technique — live bait, cut bait, trolling, casting with lures.
Fly fishermen are scoring with white deceivers and clousers. Use single, barbless hook spinners above First Street for salmon.

• New Zealand
Look at this incredible deal for an all inclusive trip to New Zealand to try your hand at fly-fishing for their legendary trout.

Fish three days for giant rainbows at Tonqariro on the North Island, then fish three more for trophy browns at Rotoroa Lodge on the South Island.

A package for two anglers starts at $4,875 each. It includes round trip airfare from Los Angeles to Auckland, eight nights lodging, most meals, six days of guided fishing, domestic air fares in New Zealand, all equipment, airport transfers and taxes.

Call (800) 528-6129 for more information.

Lake Hennessey

Regular Department of Fish & Game trout stocking has resumed after the hot weather. They do this about every two weeks — I’ll try to keep you posted. Add these new trout to some big “holdovers” and we’ll see some good angling here soon.

There is a pretty good bass bite on plastics and rattletraps.

• Lake Berryessa

According to the guys at Spanish Flat Resort Marina (966-7708), the lake has “turned,” bringing baitfish and sport fish up close to the surface. Trout are hitting orange/silver or green/silver Needlefish in 10 to 15 feet of water.

Putah Creek is giving up some nice small mouth bass. Fish early for crappie around docks and brush with small jigs or minnows.

• Bodega Bay

Judy is back working after her recovery from neck surgery. She reminds us that the crab season opens this Saturday.

Call her at 875-2323 to book either a crab only or a crab/rockfish combo trip. When you return to the dock, she’ll cook your crab for $1 each.

• California Delta

The striper bite is good and improving. There have been lots of reports of linesides of 15 to 25 pounds.

Many “old salts” here truly believe that the best of the salmon bite is yet to come. I’m skeptical, but hopeful.

Ghost and grass shrimp are taking some sturgeon. Roland Aspiras boated a 51-incher the other day.

It’s time to call captain Barry Canevaro — or captain Diana Canevaro — at (916) 777-6498 to book a sturgeon trip. They are the best.

• Sacramento River

The late fall king salmon run regularly produces the biggest fish of the season. A chance for a 50-pounder through the end of the month is very real.

• Smith River

Get out your calendar and call river guide Kevin Brock for a trip on the Smith targeting big strong steelhead right through March. He books up quickly so don’t delay — call him at (800) 995-5543.

Stan Press and I will fish with him there in late February.

We’ll be trying to duplicate the time that Stan boated and released a 20-pounder a couple of years ago. For those who haven’t done it, you can’t imagine the strength and beauty of such a silvery monster.
