Art Notes: In plein air
Artist Gretchen Kimball offers would-be painters a fool-proof opportunity to create a painting with her two-day plein air workshops in the valley.
Kimball sets up everything in a private, (no gawking tourists wondering what you’re doing) scenic location in the valley — easels, canvases, paints, brushes, palettes, and linseed oil along with a picnic lunch, and wine for a little added inspiration.
Most of all, Kimball provides step-by-step instruction, from framing a scene, to sketching it to taking the plunge and putting oils on a blank canvas.
A recent weekend foray into the vineyards above Quintessa Winery, brought together an artist from Angwin, a mother and daughter visiting the valley to celebrate the daughter’s 21st birthday, and two participants who had never before done as much as pick up a brush, and by the end of the first afternoon session, each had produced an oil painting, or at least the beginning of one.
Kimball holds two more workshops this year, Oct. 21-22 and Nov. 10-11. She’ll resume the workshops next spring.
