Sports capsule: Road Runners race to softball title

The Napa Road Runners 10-under softball team took first place in the Davis/Dixon Tournament last weekend.
On Saturday, Napa played three games against the Tri-County Diamonds, Berkeley Stings and Pleasant Hill Panthers.
On Sunday the Roadrunners dominated in the two games they played. In the semifinal game, Napa blanked Berkeley 6-0.
Mariah Galista pitched a complete game, allowing no runs and two walks while striking out nine.
In the second inning, Napa’s Katie Clayton doubled to left. Katie Bishop singled to score Clayton. In the top of the third inning, Melissa Knedel singled to short and scored on a double by Cheyanne Beauford.
In the bottom of the third inning, Berkeley loaded the bases with two outs, but Napa shortstop Brittany Hudler made an outstanding catch to end the inning.
Tori Driscoll-Stensby started a Road Runners rally in the top of the fourth with a base hit, along with safeties by Bishop and Taylor Stillemen. Napa’s Jordon Hernandez ran for Stillemen in the inning.
Casey Handcock’s drive to center field scored all three runners for a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Stings put a runner on first base, but the next batter hit the ball to Clayton, who tagged the runner breaking from first and threw the ball to first for a double play.
In the fifth inning, Beauford doubled and scored on another double by Peyton Driscoll-Stensby.
In the championship game against Pleasant Hill, Handcock started out slowly at pitcher for Napa as the Panthers scored a pair of early runs.
Handcock ssettled down to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Road Runners came back in the second inning when Tori Driscoll-Stensby and Galista reached base and scored on a two-run double by Stillemen.
In the third inning, Hudler reached second on a bunt and scored on a base hit to center by Beauford.
In the top of the sixth, Clayton came home on Bishop’s hit, giving Napa a 4-2 lead.
Handcock did not allow any more runs, finishing with 18 strikeouts, three walks, five hits, and only two runs scored in seven innings as the Road Runners claimed the crown.
Wessels wins tough race in China
While traveling to Beijing to Shanghai, China, Napa firefighter/paramedic captain Bob Wessels stopped off in the city of Tai’an, China to compete in the annual race to the summit of Mount Tai.
The race is seven miles and 7,000 steps up Mount Tai to the Buddhist temple at the summit.
Wessels received special permission from the Chinese government to participate in the senior division, which was 31⁄2 miles and 3,500 steps up to Mount Tai.
Wessels was the first American ever to enter the race and took first place in the senior division. He received national media attention in China when he donated his prize money of 1,000 yen — $120 in U.S currency — to a local school in Tai’an, China.
The donation was used to purchase tooth brushes, tooth paste and playground equipment for local children.
Hole-in-one at Silverado Resort
Lorna Wray used a 5-wood to ace the par-3, 132-yard second hole on the Silverado Resort North Course Friday. Rod Wray and Dick Bottomley witnessed the hole-in-one.
Melton receives Tae Kwon Do certification
Wesley Melton, 13, has received international certification as a first-degree junior black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art and sport, best known for its unique aerial kicking techniques. It is the only form of karate included in the Olympic Games. Melton is registered with the Kukkiwon, the world Tae Kwon Do headquarters in Seoul, Korea.
Melton began his training in Tae Kwon Do in 1999 and has trained at the Napa Tae Kwon Do Academy for the past 21⁄2 years. He has competed in Olympic-style Tae Kwon Do tournaments and assists with rank promotions.
Melton is in the eighth grade at Redwood Middle School.
Napa Area Golf Tournament Oct. 9
The Napa Area 9th annual Golf Tournament, a benefit for the 11-99 Foundation/CAHP Widows and Orphans, is Oct. 9 at Eagles Vines Golf Club.
Check-in time is 8:30 a.m. and the shotgun start is at 10 a.m.
The format is a four-man scramble.
The $175 cost includes greens fees, cart, tee prizes, beverages, continental breakfast, lunch, and a banquet dinner, including Napa Valley wines.
A corvette from Team Chevrolet is the hole-in-one prize.
There are also gifts for closest-to-the-pin and longest drive. The evening also includes live and silent auctions, golf trophies for the top three groups, and raffle prizes.

Warriors to hold open practice Oct. 9
The Golden State Warriors have announced that the team will hold a practice session open to the public at The Arena in Oakland on Monday, Oct. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Parking and admission to the event will be free for all fans, with doors opening at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Concession stands will also be open, with food and beverage items being sold at their regular prices.

North Bay BMX grand opening Oct. 14
A grand opening, complete with celebrations and a ribbon cutting ceremony for North Bay BMX, will begin at noon on Oct. 14.
The first race and flag lap will be at 12:30 p.m at the Napa track, located at Kennedy Park, by the south end of the baseball/softball fields.
Registration is at 10 a.m. for BMX racers. One hundred racers will be assigned classes based on age and ability.
Required race gear includes lace-up shoes, pants, long sleeve shirt and approved bicycle helmet (full face recommended). There are no reflectors, chain guards or pegs allowed.
A pre-tech on safety equipment and bicycles will take place Oct. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. for anyone that has any questions or needs additional information on equipment/race requirements.

Justin-Siena basketball coaches clinic Oct. 15
Justin-Siena High School will host its 2006 Basketball Coaches Clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Dan Clark Gym.
Basketball coaches of all ages and skill levels are invited. The cost is $50 and includes a T-shirt, handouts, refreshments and lunch.
Registration will be at 8:45 a.m. with introductions at 9 a.m., followed by instruction from 9:30 to noon. After lunch, instruction will continue and wrap up with a final topic that starts at 3:15 p.m.
Players will demonstrate drills and techniques.
Those interested are urged to register by Oct. 12, though walk-ups are welcome.

Junior golf sessions at Vintner’s on Saturdays
The Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville is offering junior golf sessions every Saturday. Sessions, open to all ages and all skill levels, run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.
The cost is $25 per player per session.
Sessions will cover golf instruction for all skill levels, golf etiquette, general golf rules, daily contests and skills challenges.
