Prep report: Crushers cruise to win over Wood

The Vintage High School girls tennis team beat Wood, 7-2, in a Monticello Empire League match Thursday.
Tessa Mini (6-1, 6-2) continued her undefeated season at No. 1 singles while Kirsten Lew (7-5, 4-6, 10-8) and Stephanie Sasloff (2-6, 6-1, 6-3) battled to come back and win close three-setters at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, respectively. Lauren Lasch (6-1, 6-3) and Joyce Jemison (6-0, 6-1) both dominated at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively.
Becca Bobzien and Nicole Zuniga (6-2, 6-3) played well at No. 1 doubles, as did Rachel Smith and Kristen Aye (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2.
Kara Shurmantine lost a close match at No. 2 singles in a 10-point tiebreaker (1-6, 7-6, 11-9) and the tandem of Emily Pope and Shawnee Herbert lost at No. 3 doubles (6-3, 7-5).
Andrea Varias (8-6) earned her first exhibition singles win of the year while A. Jay Ludlow (8-6) also came out with a win in her eight-game pro set. Soriya Efishoff and Lily Rivera (9-8, 8-6 in the 10-point tiebreaker) also debuted their doubles strategy with a very close eight-game pro set.
Vintage is 7-3 in the MEL.
• Justin-Siena 9, Novato 0
Justin-Siena swept Novato to improve to 3-3 in Marin County Athletic League play. The Braves’ Courtney Heathcote (6-0, 6-2), Erin O’Brien (6-1, 6-3), Victoria Matyka (6-3, 6-3), Julie Ring (6-0, 6-2), Romie Landry (6-3, 6-0) and Kelsea Thomas (6-2, 6-1) all won in singles play.
The tandems of Rachel Perez-Ruiz and Alyson Smith, Mackenzie Flanagan and Luisa Horstman, and Molly Ha-Hoang and Sydnie Souza all won in doubles matches.
Varsity Boys Soccer
• Trinity Prep 1, Vacaville Christian 1
Alex Biale found the net for the Crusaders (1-6-1 overall) in the 22nd minute on a header from Grace Cortright to give Trinity a 1-0 lead going into the half.
Vacaville tied it up 1-1 in the 51st minute when a Thomas Gustafson deflection caught Trinity keeper Cameron Cruz leaning. Cruz had a strong game with 11 saves and shut down a relentless Vacaville attack in the second half with help from Caleb Mendoza, Jonny Mendoza and Philip Figueroa.
The Crusaders had a season-high 12 shots on goal for the game, which was played at Napa Valley College.
Varisty Girls Golf
• Justin-Siena 230, Tamalpais 257
The Braves hosted their Marin County Athletic Leauge opponent Thursday afternoon on the Vintner’s Golf Club’s par-34. Emily Talley led Justin with a 36, while Kate Olen and Ali Amaral shot a 41 and 44 respectively. Andi Bernard (54) and Laura Perez (55) rounded out the Braves’ pack.
Justin-Siena (6-1 MCAL) play Terra Linda at Peacock Gap on Monday at 4 p.m.
Varsity Volleyball
• Napa Christian 3, Buckingham Charter 1
Napa Christian beat Buckingham Charter-Vacaville, 25-19, 18-25, 25-12, 25-14, on Thursday night in Vacaville. The Knights were led by two service runs that put any hope of a comeback out of reach. Ruby Schuler had a nine-point run in the third game and Jasmine Howard had 12 points in the fourth game.
JV Girls Water Polo
• Napa 15, Fairfield 2
Napa scored 11 goals in the second half. Jamie Forcier led the offense with five goals, three assists and three steals. Emma Witt added two goals, as did Alex St. Clair and Kayla Madole. Rebecca DeMatteo, Sara Douglass, Sarah Frisch and Lindsay Schmitz also scored. Kaitlyn Shubin, Witt, Douglass and Madole had assists.
Defensively, Shubin had a good afternoon in the cage, blocking five Falcon shots, while Frisch stopped two balls. Douglass led the Indians with four steals and Madole had three. Schmitz, Chester and St. Clair recorded single thefts. The Indians are 10-1 on the season, 4-0 in the MEL.
JV Boys Water Polo
• Napa 8, Fairfield 4
Napa came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first quarter and tied the game at the half. Six Napa players scored, led by Robin Dore-Andrews and Kevin Lung with two goals apiece.
Daniel Engelskirger, Drew Teicheira, Devon Jones and Spencer May also scored. Curtis Tinloy had the Indians’ lone assist. Lung and May had four and three steals, respectively, Teicheira and Dore-Andrews added two apiece with Jarrod Ebeling, Jones and Engelskirger adding one each. Stefan Burns went all the way in goal for Napa (5-0 overall, 4-0 MEL).
