WILLITS — The St. Helena High School football team broke the Willits Wolverines’ shutout streak and nearly shocked the unbeaten hosts before falling 15-13 Friday night in Willits.

The Saints got as far as the Willits 37 before turning the ball over on downs with just over two minutes left, and the Wolverines ran out the clock.
The Saints broke Willits’ shutout streak of 10 season-opening quarters with 9:42 left in the third period when David Fanucci scored on a 5-yard run. The extra point was no good, making it 7-6 Willits.

The Wolverines (4-0) answered on the ensuing drive when Chris Bickford scored on an 8-yard run with 5:56 left in the third quarter.
The Saints appeared to have Willits in trouble on the extra point when holder Charles Wright bobbled the snap, but Wright rolled to his right to escape trouble and went back to his left before connecting with Mike Moynahan for the 2-point conversion to make it 15-6 Willits.

St. Helena (2-2) answered with a 14-play, 68-yard drive that Fanucci capped off with a 2-yard scoring run.
Jake Holguin added the extra point, making it 15-13 Willits.

Fanucci had 28 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns on the night.

Willits took a 7-0 lead late in the second half on Wright’s 3-yard quarterback keeper at the 1:55 mark of the second quarter, and the Saints got no closer than the Wolverines’ 20 in the opening two periods.

Fanucci recorded a tackle for loss in the first half, while Dylan Rahn posted a fumble recovery.

The Saints travel to Lower Lake next Friday.

• Willits JV 12, St. Helena 6

The Saints got a 14-yard scoring run from Edgar Caldera and fumble recoveries from Jesus Corro and Alec Wittschiebe in Friday’s loss.
