Napa High’s football team got on an early roll Friday night and never let up to charge to its third win in a 51-20 victory over Roseville’s Woodcreek at Napa Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The second quarter was the only one in which Napa was kept to just one touchdown.
The Indians had heard of Michael Dutra — the Timberwolves’ leading running back who had run for 526 yards in his first three games — but there was no intimidation. After head coach Troy Mott challenged his defense, Napa held Dutra to just 11 first-half yards and a total of 41 on the night.

“The Black Shirt defense did it,” Mott said, adding that his strategy to keep Dutra at bay was “a secret. (Dutra) wasn’t going to get his tonight. He’s a great running back, our kids were just up to the challenge.
“We had a great week of practice. The best week this season by far. Their focus went right from the practice field to the game field.”

After just two minutes, Napa’s Jake Croxdale ran a 14-yarder into the end zone for the Indians’ first score and Ted LeMasters’ conversion pass to Thomas Wilcoxson was good to give Napa the 8-0 lead.
Napa was forced to punt on its next possession, but a 15-yard penalty was given to Woodcreek for roughing the kicker, LeMasters, which gave the Indians a first down. That led to Croxdale’s second touchdown — a 1-yard rush with :31.2 left in the first quarter. Stephen Oja’s PAT was good and the Indians were up 14-0.

Croxdale totaled four touchdowns on the night to bring his season total to a team-leading eight scores. He also ran for a season-high 116 yards.

Another strong rusher was John Boyett, who carried the ball 11 times for 131 yards and one touchdown — a 50-yard quarterback keeper with 1:22 left in the game.

“Our offensive line is continuing to progress and get better and better,” Mott explained, as to why his key running backs had such a standout night. “Those two guys (Croxdale and Boyett) are great athletes. They still have some work to do, they’re starting to get it.”

Mott added that this is Boyett’s first year not starting at quarterback, but it doesn’t seem to show too much. Mott added that it’s a tribute to the junior when teams such as Woodcreek change up their defense in order to corral him.

“He’s not there yet,” Mott said. “We give him a lot every week. Teams are starting to respect him. He’s a great football player.”

Napa racked up a 21-0 lead when LeMasters connected with Boyett for a 12-yard touchdown pass, and Oja’s extra point was good.

Woodcreek finally managed a score with 1:27 left in the half when Eric Fuchino’s 20-yard pass to Ronnie Brooks was good, though the ensuing 2-point attempt failed.

Just as the buzzer sounded to end the half, Napa’s Hayden Campo intercepted a pass from Fuchino.

Up 22-6 heading into the third quarter, LeMasters spiraled a pass to Ryan Kostecka for a 37-yard score and another six points. LeMasters’ pass to Jason Westerberg was also complete and the Indians were up 30-6.

Ryan Finnerty fumbled on the Timberwolves’ next possession and Wilcoxson recovered it on the 21-yard line. Croxdale ran for all 21 yards, and the second was a 19-yard rush for another six points.

Oja’s kick was off but the Indians retained a 36-6 lead. Woodcreek turned the ball over on downs and Napa pushed up field from its 27-yard line. Six plays later Croxdale scored his fourth touchdown and Oja’s PAT was solid to put the score at 43-6 in favor of the Indians with 11:30 left in the game.

Woodcreek carried the ball upfield on nine carries, the final coming on a 27-yard run from Dutra for a Timberwolves touchdown. Napa blocked the PAT to leave the score at 43-12.

With much of their second team offense on the line, the Indians were forced to punt which led to another Woodcreek touchdown — a 2-yard run from Tyler Privette. Finnerty ran it in for another two points to put the score at 43-20. Just more than a minute later is when Boyett sprinted into the end zone to finish the night’s scoring.

Napa (3-1 overall) travels to Oakland to play Skyline in its final nonleague game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Indians open their Monticello Empire League season against visiting Will C. Wood on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The Indians suffered their first loss this season — many of their first since playing for Napa High.

Its freshman team went undefeated last year.

“The defense played great,” defensive coordinator Nick Tedesco said. “The score doesn’t indicate how well they played.”

Daniel Burgess rushed for Napa’s lone touchdown on a 40-yard run.

Napa had several turnovers which led to the demise of its offense. Tedesco was pleased with the play of Burgess, Beau Sisemore, Justin Ruffino and Scott Polsgrove.

“Hopefully this leaves a bad taste in our mouths and we’ll see what we’re made of next week and going into league,” Tedesco added.

Napa is now 2-1-1 overall and travels to Skyline on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
