Napa golfer John Lawson is on his way to the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, which will be held Oct. 25 to 30 in Mesquite, Nev.
Lawson, a Napa resident who played three years of golf for UC Davis, got into the elite field by winning a local qualifier in Seattle earlier this month with a drive of 345 yards.
This is Lawson’s second year in the finals. There are 128 players in the field. They are limited to only a handful of drives per round and they hit to a grid, which is just 40 yards wide.
Lawson is a 2000 Napa High graduate and won Napa City Golf Championships in 2001 and 2002. He was an All-MEL player his sophomore, junior and senior years at Napa High, and was the MEL runner-up his last two years.

Dr. David Goodwill, a Napa dentist, said his Miyamo sprint car just wasn’t up to par as he placed third in both his heat race and the main event at Reno-Fernley Raceway.
“Motor wasn’t running worth a darn and the brakes didn’t work worth a darn all night,” said Goodwill. “We still had a pretty good night, but it wasn’t what we were hoping for.”
It was a different story, though, in Chowchilla. Goodwill took his Kaeding Racing Products sprint car to victory in both his heat race and the trophy dash.
Starting eighth in the main event, Goodwill was able to finish fifth.
“All in all, it was pretty good,” Goodwill said. “The car was good. The motor was good, and I guess the driver was good, too.”
Goodwill resumes his racing Oct. 13 and 14 at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
