Fishing Report

Saturday is one of the annual “Free Fishing Days.” Sept. 23 is the other one. No license required on either day. Gather up the kids and just go do it. Here are some places where you can find some action:

'All the King's Men' pretentious, bombastic

Everyone involved with "All the King's Men" must have felt justified by the compulsion to create an important film, one that's pulsating with relevance, a film that has Something To Say.

Back in the spotlight

The public debut performances for the new school year of the 2006-07 Napa High School Vocal Music Workshop, Men's Choir, Treble Choir and the afternoon Concert Choir will highlight the annual Singing in the Spotlight show on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Napa High School Quad at 2475 Jefferson St.

Go fish!

September has been a great month for fish lovers in the Napa Valley. Not only did Cindy Pawlcyn open Go Fish, a terrific fish house in St. Helena, but the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville has opened a remarkable new show, dedicated to fish.

One call out of the blue -- $500,000 -- no strings attached

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation today named 25 new MacArthur Fellows for 2006, including a developmental biologist, a sculptor, a country doctor, a jazz violinist and a deep-sea explorer. All were selected for their creativity, originality and potential to make important contributions in the future and learned by a phone call from the foundation that they will each receive $500,000 in "no strings attached" support over the next five years.

English stars and Mozart's birthday at the Opera House

From her modest beginnings as a singer in English dance halls, Dame Cleo Laine has gone on to achieve international fame by continually expanding her talents in a career which spans some four decades. One of the most celebrated singers of our time, Laine commands a dazzling array of vocal styles, and is the only singer ever to receive Grammy nominations in the Female Jazz, Popular and Classical categories.

Blessing of the grapes

In wine regions around the world the blessing of the grapes is a long-standing tradition that signals harvest is underway. Always acknowledging that, especially at this critical point, it's a good idea to have higher powers working with you, the local priest -- or rabbi, minister or Tibetan monk -- comes into the vineyards to extend his blessing, creating as well a time for celebration.

Napa Reads

Last week the Register published the first chapter from "The Circuit" Francisco Jimenez's moving collection of short stories depicting the life of a child whose family follows the harvest around California, working in vineyards and fields of cotton, tomatoes, carrots and lettuce.

A tank of gas will take you to the Renaissance

Tired of the hustle and bustle of the 21st century? Ready for a change? Then take a two-hour drive south of Napa, past the garlic that made Gilroy famous, and step back into Elizabethan England at the Northern California Renaissance Faire.

360 Global Wines explains its losses

360 Global Wines, which owns Viansa Winery & Italian Marketplace in Sonoma County, recently reported a loss of $24.2 million for the first six months of the calendar year, and at the same time announced it had divested its half-interest in Kirkland Ranch Winery on Jamieson Canyon Road.

Harvest Report: Week Four

The cool weather continues to allow the red wine grapes to ripen and flavors continue to deepen, while most of the whites have been harvested. Pat Stotesbery from Ladera Vineyards said the Howell Mountain district might be unusual, but added, “across the board we are ahead of last year.” Others, including Paul Smith and Dawnine Dyer, said the weather was cold last week, reminding everyone that fall is approaching.

Wine lover’s nose for fraud sparks international investigation

PALM BEACH, Fla. — When Boston’s Museum of Fine Art displayed William Koch’s private collection last year, the treasures included paintings by Monet, Degas and Dali, a trove of Greco-Roman and American West artifacts, and his renowned racing yacht, winner of the 1992 America’s Cup.

Fruit desserts ease tastily from summer into fall

It’s almost time to say goodbye to the luscious, ripe summer fruit that we’ve all so much enjoyed. Although these days we have out-of-season fruit shipped in from the four corners of the world, there’s nothing quite like local, fresh-picked seasonal produce for flavor and nutritional value.

The Phantom Fork: Small World serves a bit of Middle East in downtown Napa

Each Tuesday The Register reviews an area restaurant, with an emphasis on establishments where a couple can dine for $30 or less.  Reader suggestions are welcomed.

Here's a fall dessert that's just peachy

One of the pleasures of this job is eating -- and then getting to ask for the recipes that are particularly memorable, divine or just so good you'd like to see if you might be able to duplicate it.

Miracles from a stick

Making new plants from cuttings can be an enjoyable pastime if you don’t expect 100 percent success. Some plants root more easily than others.

Napa County Landmarks names threatened treasures for 2006

Napa County Landmarks, the county’s nonprofit historic preservation organization, announced its annual list of Ten Threatened Treasures Sunday. These sites of historic and cultural importance are in danger of destruction, sometimes by developers and sometimes simply by neglect.

Practical decorating and problem-solving

After getting a degree in interior design and space planning, I knew I was in the right church, but the wrong pew. It seemed too easy and boring to start from square one with a client, and have them purchase whatever new furnishings I deemed appropriate. Where is the creativity in that? Most homeowners are pleased with most of their furnishings, but not how they’re placed. That is why interior redesigners are being hired to solve decorating, spatial and functional challenges.

No deep, dark secrets in growing mushrooms

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa.— Folks into fungi in and around this Brandywine Valley community — and there are many — like to say that mushroom growing isn’t such a dark science. All you need is a healthy horse and shade.

Don’t wait to repair or replace your leaking roof

For many homeowners, a new roof can be the single most expensive non-elective home improvement one makes. So before deciding to buy a new roof, you may want to take steps to prolong the life of the one you’ve got.

Trees and People: Pruning for fire protection

It came to my attention that fire protection regulations have been changed to increase the buffer zone around homes and structures adjoining wildlands. Since the fire season is not yet over, and many homeowners around Napa Valley are at risk, I want to give you an update on the subject

Rammed earth: ancient construction method generates 21st century interest

Rammed earth homes aren’t a new fad. In fact, rammed earth construction was taking place in 2,000 B.C. in Mesopotamia and ancient China.
