The public debut performances for the new school year of the 2006-07 Napa High School Vocal Music Workshop, Men's Choir, Treble Choir and the afternoon Concert Choir will highlight the annual Singing in the Spotlight show on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Napa High School Quad at 2475 Jefferson St.

The two-hour performance will feature the school's acclaimed a capella pop ensemble, Vocal Music Workshop, an ensemble of 10 singers performing on an electronic sound system.
The Men's Choir and Treble (Women's) Choir, the school's two beginning choruses, will each perform four songs on the program.

The afternoon Concert Choir will close the evening by singing a gospel arrangement of the Simon and Garfunkel hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
Several student-created special acts will also be a part of the show, featuring both solo and small group presentations.

Tickets at $7.50 each are available in advance from the Napa High School music office at 2475 Jefferson Street, or may be reserved by phoning 253-3705 during school hours. Remaining tickets will be sold at the entrance gates off of Jefferson Street by the school flagpole. Parking is available in the school lots on Jefferson Street.
A picnic dinner at $3 per person and beverages at $1 each will be offered beginning when gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Audience patrons are encouraged to bring blankets and low "beach" style chairs to sit on the quad lawn for the performance as fixed seating in the area is limited to a few park benches.

Support the singers

Also, the Napa High choirsters, who will be traveling to perform in Ireland next March, will be holding a parking lot sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the front parking lot at Napa High. The multi-family sale will be offering "all kind of good stuff," the proceeds from which will help the kids pay for their performance outfits and other choir expenses, including travel.

A cartooning pioneer

Cleven "Goodie" Goudeau is the artist demonstrator for the September 2006 general meeting of the Napa Valley Art Association. Goudeau, a pioneer as the first black cartoonist, made the first national line of greeting cards in the United States. A self-taught as a cartoonist, he decided at age 43 to get his degree in art at Columbia University and studied further at the Pratt Institute. He was the co-founder and executive creative director of Onyx Enterprises Inc. which in 1968 was the only company producing black and white greeting cards. He describes his successes in the cartooning and greeting cards bittersweet.

He is an active member of the Vallejo Artists Guild where he teaches classes in cartooning. He also sells his paintings; watercolors, portraits of jazz musicians, caricatures and cartoons.

The demonstration will be held at 1 p.m. at 1520 Behrens St. in Napa on Monday. No R.S.V.P. or registration is required.

Master of Magic

"Enchanting the Vines" a Red Carpet Event production, will be back in wine country Sept. 29 and 30, presenting four shows of magic, comedy, and enchantment for all ages.

Well known performer Jeremy Ducharme started magic at the age of 10. After practicing and inventing his own tricks, he took it to the next level by starting his professional career at 16. Years later, the award winning magician has performed shows all over the world for thousands of people. Ducharme created this show as a close and personal experience, putting the magic in the spectator's hands. "The magic is so up close and personal you can reach out and touch it," he said.

The master magician specializes in close up miracles, illusions, and pick pocketing with a unique comical twist. This show will also feature Big Al Catraz, a Bay Area performer, known for his comedy, characters and amazing ability to keep people on the edge of their seats.

They'll be offering an early show and a late show on each day at the Harvest Inn, St. Helena. Show times are at 6:30 and 9 p.m.. Each show seats 50 people and seating is limited. A wine and hors d'oeuvres reception takes place an hour before each show. For information call Red Carpet Events at (510) 658-4033.

The river that

runs through Napa

Napa documentary photographer Samanda Dorger will be on hand at Studio II gallery Saturday, from 7 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss her current show on the Napa River at a reception from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Dorger will describe her methods and means for photographing the changing the river's from 7 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge, but seating limited; please call to reserve a place at 257-0900. Studio II Gallery-Napa Valley is at 570 Soscol Ave. in Napa. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m to 5 p.m.

Harvest spectacular

Trinity Prep's 10th annual Fall Harvest Fest takes place at St. Supery Winery, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its live and silent auctions will include premium wines, vacation getaways, celebrity sports items and works of art. Wine tasting and food served by Kinyon Catering are part of the evening. Tickets are $65 in advance and $75 at the door. For reservations, call 251-5833.
