California Shakespeare Theatre’s “As You Like It,” which opened last weekend, is a dazzler that lights up a night like a fireworks show filled with one delight after another.

The public debut performances for the new school year of the 2006-07 Napa High School Vocal Music Workshop, Men's Choir, Treble Choir and the afternoon Concert Choir will highlight the annual Singing in the Spotlight show on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Napa High School Quad at 2475 Jefferson St.

September has been a great month for fish lovers in the Napa Valley. Not only did Cindy Pawlcyn open Go Fish, a terrific fish house in St. Helena, but the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville has opened a remarkable new show, dedicated to fish.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation today named 25 new MacArthur Fellows for 2006, including a developmental biologist, a sculptor, a country doctor, a jazz violinist and a deep-sea explorer. All were selected for their creativity, originality and potential to make important contributions in the future and learned by a phone call from the foundation that they will each receive $500,000 in "no strings attached" support over the next five years.

From her modest beginnings as a singer in English dance halls, Dame Cleo Laine has gone on to achieve international fame by continually expanding her talents in a career which spans some four decades. One of the most celebrated singers of our time, Laine commands a dazzling array of vocal styles, and is the only singer ever to receive Grammy nominations in the Female Jazz, Popular and Classical categories.

In wine regions around the world the blessing of the grapes is a long-standing tradition that signals harvest is underway. Always acknowledging that, especially at this critical point, it's a good idea to have higher powers working with you, the local priest -- or rabbi, minister or Tibetan monk -- comes into the vineyards to extend his blessing, creating as well a time for celebration.

Last week the Register published the first chapter from "The Circuit" Francisco Jimenez's moving collection of short stories depicting the life of a child whose family follows the harvest around California, working in vineyards and fields of cotton, tomatoes, carrots and lettuce.

Clarence and Marilyn (Bonneau) Stegner of Napa celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 5 at the home of Chris and Lori Yoder. Family and friends gathered for an afternoon celebration in which they were entertained by the couple's granddaughter, Lindsey, singing their favorite songs from the '50s, as well as sharing many heartfelt memories of the couple's 50 years of marriage.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Vallerga of Napa celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with family on Aug. 27. The couple married on Aug. 28, 1981.

Jessica Lee Detwiler and Joel Kevin Potts, both of Napa, married on Aug. 26. The matron of honor was Rachel Marsh and the best man was Paul Potts. Groomsmen included Bryan Marsh, Ernesto Falcon and Michael Falcon, all brothers of the bride. The flower girls were Malia Tharp and Kaylee Potts and ring bearers were Jared Potts and Trevor Potts. The ceremony and reception were held at the Napa Valley Marriott. The couple will honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico.

Toni Marie Rios and Darrel Augustine Juarez married on Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. at Montington Vineyards. The matron of honor was Janie Torres and Sara Gonzalez was the bridesmaid. The best man was Brandon Rugg and Ray Rios was an usher. Gwendolyn VonDohlen was the flower girl and Hunter Padilla was the ring bearer. The reception was held at Montington Vineyards.

Jim and Pat Gibbany celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a week in the Tahoe Valley at Zephyr Cove. Sharing the celebration was their daughter and family, Gary and Kim Markovich and granddaughters, Kandace and Camille. In addition, extended family Larry Edwards and Shane Rasner from Memphis, Tenn., joined them.
