'Independent woman' served as muse for designers at Fashion Week
By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL, AP Fashion Writer
NEW YORK -- The "independent woman" has been a driving force behind the spring 2007 collections presented at New York Fashion Week.
In their notes to editors, retailers and stylists explaining what influenced their clothes, various designers wrote that the women they had in mind were strong, confident and independent, who dress mostly to please themselves, and not to impress a man, a boss or their social circle.
"For spring, I was inspired by a strong, sophisticated elegance that mixes refined luxury with cinematic glamour and an air of mystery," said Ralph Lauren.
Meanwhile, Donna Karan said her look strived to achieve "urban diversity." Both Lauren and Karan, titans of the industry, presented their collections Friday, the final day of Fashion Week, and so did the newbies -- the contestants of "Project Runway" and the first season winner of the Bravo TV show, Jay McCarroll.
The four "Project Runway" finalists -- Michael Knight, Uli Herzner, Jeffrey Sebelia and Laura Bennett -- staged presentations at the Bryant Park tents but only three will be seen when the reality show's finale airs Oct. 18. Producers didn't want the media to spoil things for viewers, who'll see one of them booted before that date.
Knight, considered a shoo-in to win the competition, drew whoops and hollers when he introduced his va-va-voom collection of "street safari" looks. A model, wearing a gold-and-zebra print swimsuit with heels and oversized hoop earrings, looked ready to walka off the runway onto a Brazilian beach.
A very pregnant Bennett showed off luxurious evening wear heavy on lace and sleek silhouettes. A long-sleeved black lace dress -- adorned with black feather trim from the waist to the short hemline -- was outstanding, as was a shiny gray gown that had a yellow velvet belt.
Sebelia is the contestant that viewers love to hate. His collection was brighter and more feminine in comparison with his work in other episodes, which was often dark and grungy. Many looks featured vibrant patterns in look-at-me colors, such as an emerald-and-white-striped party dress that even his rock-chick fans would love.
The German-born Herzner lives in Florida. It shows. Her collection had a beachy feel, featuring many long dresses in the night-out-in-Miami prints that are her trademark. A glittery silver mini-dress that had long sleeves was a nice departure, as was a silver tank top worn with dressy shorts.
