Sheriff's deputies make multiple meth busts
By MARSHA DORGAN, Register Staff Writer
Sheriff's deputies were kept hopping on Thursday from one drug bust to another.
The action started around noon when a deputy came upon a car stopped in the middle of the intersection of Deer Park Road and Gist Road.
"The vehicle was blocking traffic," Sheriff's Capt. John Robertson said.
The deputy pulled in behind the vehicle and contacted the driver, Ramon Saldana Gaitan, Robertson said.
Gaitan handed the deputy an identification card, Robertson said. "He did not have a valid driver's license."
Although the deputies did not need consent to search Gaitan because is on probation, he agreed to the search, Robertson said.
During the search deputies found a baggie of suspected methamphetamine in Gaitan's pants pocket, he said.
Gaitan, 47, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth, driving without a valid driver's license and violation of probation.
Later that evening, two officers spotted a red motorcycle making a left turn onto Cabot Way from Imola Avenue.
The officers recognized the bike as belonging to Robert Joseph Avila, a parolee, Robertson said. "They knew he was on parole and did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his driver's license."
The officers contacted Avila and he willingly handed over a baggie of suspected meth to them, Robertson said.
Avila, 28, of American Canyon, was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth, transportation of meth, and violation of parole.
Around 11 p.m. Thursday, a deputy patrolling Upvalley noticed a car parked on Rutherford Cross Road. He stopped his patrol car to see if everything was OK, Robertson said.
When he contacted Raul Arevalo Avina sitting in the driver's seat, the deputy noticed Avina was holding a piece of aluminum foil, Robertson said.
Avina crumpled the foil and attempted to hide it from the deputy, he said.
The deputy asked Avina to get out of the vehicle, and he complied. The deputy found suspected meth inside the foil and also found meth in Avina's pants pocket, Robertson said.
Avina, 39, of Calistoga, was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth.
