Napa will consider naming Laurel Park in west Napa for Cesar Chavez, the founder of the United Farm Workers union.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission last week chose Laurel Park as a likely candidate for the naming honor, but first the Community Resources Department will confer with neighbors.
The commission is scheduled to hold a hearing Oct. 11 on a possible Chavez park near the Westwood neighborhood at the base of Westwood Hills.

Community Resources staff Wednesday night suggested three possible sites for a Chavez park. The department was responding to several community requests to honor Chavez, the labor leader who worked to improve conditions for farmworkers.
Staff proposed Fairview Park in east Napa, Laurel Park in west Napa and the future South Jefferson Street park for naming honors.

The commission heard community comment pro and con, then selected Laurel Park for further review.
Chavez advocates, including representatives of the United Farm Workers, said naming a park for Chavez would honor the Napa Valley's farmworkers.

Others thought a local Hispanic might be a better choice if the city wanted to honor farmworkers.

Any decision by the commission would have to be approved by the City Council./Register

" Nameing Laurel Park after Cesar Chavez is an absolute insult to; the members United States Armed Forces and their families who DIED or were DISABLED making this country what it is today. My brothers did not die or became disabled so that some illegal immigrant and criminal could receive what this countruy has to offer. "
