Napa Minuteman offers tales from border patrol

A Napa resident who has patrolled the California-Mexico border as part of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps gave a talk to a mostly supportive crowd of Republican Party members this week, describing his experience on the frontier and explaining how he became so active on an issue that is spurring debate around the country.

John Clark, 37, said when he visited the border, he saw "coyotes" smuggling people, criminals smuggling drugs and even armed bandits on all-terrain vehicles who prey on immigrants. He said that with the chaos, U.S. Border Patrol agents are happy to have the Minutemen on the scene.
"It looks like the wild west out there," he said. "It's crazy."

Clark gave his talk to about 50 members of the Napa Valley Republican Women. Based on their comments, the audience agreed with Clark that illegal immigration is undermining the quality of life in the United States.
The talk at Embassy Suites Hotel Napa Valley in Napa comes when immigration has become one of the hottest political topics in Republican circles. Competing immigration measures in the House and Senate are on the congressional agenda this fall. The House measure focuses on border security and punishment for those who assist illegal immigrants, while the Senate measure also includes mechanisms for the illegal immigrants already living and working here to gain legal residency or citizenship.

The Minutemen have become controversial since actively working the borders. Some hail them as heroes, other as vigilantes.
Regardless, Clark may not fit some Minuteman critics' idea of a typical Minuteman.

His wife is a Chilean immigrant. One of his children's godfathers is Mexican. He said he can speak Spanish.

Still, he said, some people think he is a racist for believing so strongly in stopping the flow of undocumented immigrants.

As he responded to a flurry of comments from the Napa Valley Republican Women about his service as the Northern California director of the Minuteman, Clark was unabashed about his opinions.

"I don't believe white Europeans have a strong enough voice here," Clark said, responding to one woman who said her friends from Europe were blocked entry into the U.S. while illegal immigrants flood across the Mexican border.

Bad roads? High crime? Illegal immigrants can be the source of many troubles, Clark said, because they drain money spent on social services, and a porous border serves as a highway for all kinds of criminals.

"People say you can't blame the roads on illegal immigrants and I say you can," he said. "All the money we've been spending on social services (used by illegal immigrants) could have gone to roads."

The costs of illegal immigration in the United States are the subject of heated debate.

Many believe, as does Clark, that illegal immigrants drain healthcare and other resources. Others say illegal immigrants who use false identifications to get work actually contribute more in tax dollars than they cost the system.

Still other observers say the main cost is in the public schools, which educate the American-born children of families that crossed into the country illegally.

Clark's activism stems from a concern about what he sees happening to the state. In part it also stems from his wife's difficulties in legally immigrating to the country -- something he said took three tries, and ultimately succeeded with immigration officials only because he agreed to marry her when she came.

His lingering frustration from that experience spurred him into action.

"My wife got tired of me sitting on the couch in front of the TV bitching and moaning about illegal immigration," he said. "She said why don't you go do something about it?"

Clark began his foray into the Minuteman group last year. He said about 15 Napans have joined with him, and that there are dozens more in the Northern California chapter.

Clark said his group is armed with pistols when they spend a week -- sometimes a month -- watching the inhospitable border east of San Diego with binoculars and thermal sensing cameras. They don't interact with or detain the people they find, they merely tip off the Border Patrol.

"We'd like to leave the border security to the people who are better trained to do it, but the government is not doing it," he said.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, in fiscal year 2005 the agency arrested more than 1.1 million illegal immigrants and seized an estimated $1.7 billion worth of drugs. The agency says it has 42,000 employees who work together to secure 6,900 miles of U.S. border, including the Mexican and Canadian borders along with 95,000 miles of American shoreline.

" Great job, John, thanks for helping at the border. I encourage everyone to do a tour at the border to see the situation for themselves. "

" From article: "Still, he said, some people think he is a racist for believing so strongly in stopping the flow of undocumented immigrants." He would be racist if he was a white Gentile and wanted to end illegal immigration for ethnically motivated reasons -- rather than for some universal reason. But, he would not seriously be called racist if he were Jewish or nonwhite and promoted ending illegal immigration for ethnically motivated reasons. It is common to hear nonwhites and Jews give ethnically motivated reasons for their opposition or support of something. Jews and nonwhites are encouraged to be racially conscious and to openly promote their ethnic interests, to organize along racial lines, to appoint racially defined leaders, etc. But ... white Gentiles are expected to be racially emasculated and can only promote or oppose things for universal reasons. Any racial aggression on their part is met with instant condemnation and punishment. "

" Illegal immigration isn't about race, it's about the LAW. It's not America's fault the majority of illegals are latino, that's just fact. Way to go John Clark, keep up the great work ! "

" Many believe that immigrants are a burden to the US, taking jobs and housing and creating strains on the health care system. Yet, studies show that undocumented immigrants have limited access to state and federal public benefits and in rare circumstances, obtain emergency health care and very few other services. Access to any public benefit is often recompensed by their income taxes, unclaimed social security benefits, and cheap labor to American businesses. Undeniably, it is the lack of economic opportunities in their place of origin and of rooted social networks that push many to migrate to the United States in search for employment. But for the most part, immigration trends are responding and reconciling to the simple economic laws of supply and demand of the low-skilled, low-waged American labor market. Simply put, low-end jobs are not being exhausted by American citizens. Thus, it’s a hypocritical affair to be the vigilante, enforcing “borders”, and yet, demand a Napa Valley with wine and restaurants. It’s a hypocritical affair to sound as if the Minuteman is a “border red cross” to the “illegal” immigrant and yet, go on claiming that immigrants are the “source” of many troubles while in reality, immigrants have not only contributed to the US economy but also to American culture and values –a culture often so distant from familial integration and community/neighborhood unity. But mind these observations. Be proud of your Napa Valley! Cheer’s with a red merlot! “Illegal" immigrants are the cause of all troubles as they make possible cheap food in our dining tables. "

" Osvaldo, Please give me a break. Ever strolled into Clinic Ole or Queen of the Valley? Illegal immigrants are getting billions of dollars of free healthcare all over this country. Napa has a large illegal population and also a booming birthrate. Are these women having their babies at home with no assistance ? No they are having them at our hospital with "us" the taxpayer footing the bill. The only people benefitting from illegals are their employers. Their labor isn't so "cheap" to the American taxpayer. The Minutemen are doing the jobs our Politicians refuse to do. Our government could secure our borders in a hearbeat if they wanted to. "

" Is anyone else sick of hearing this "cheap food" BS bandied about by the friends of invaders? I haven't seen food get cheaper in decades. The employers of invaders are the ones who benefit from cheap labor, not the consumer. Even if lettuce was a few cents cheaper, the real high cost of cheap labor is in the expense of educating the numerous offspring of invaders, providing health care to the invading hordes, and so forth. Illegal aliens are criminals, one and all. They need to be aggressively ferreted out, rounded up, and immediately deported. Those who hire them should be rotting in prison. "

" I salute Mr. Clark. He put his money where his mouth was. I worked for CDF at Campo on the border in 1956. We were a favorite stopping place for the illegal inmmigrants to "water up" and they'd be on their way. While on a fire in Kern County that year one of those who stopped at Campo walked through our Fire Camp and had a meal there. they are haearty and willing to walk long distances. the jiob the US is doing is pitiful and the Minutemen have proved that. "

" Jen, Clinic Ole and Queen of the Valley are not-for-profit, nongovernmental organizations. Clinic Ole, if you do your research, receives funds from non-governmental foundations –not taxpayers. And if you take a minute to do further research, health care programs such as Medicaid/Medical, require for you to show proof that you’re legally residing in the United States. Indeed many barriers to actually request health care benefits! As to your economic concerns, it is without doubt the consumers and employers that benefit from those “illegals” –quite an interesting word you use. Here’s my suggestion to Clark and the Minuteman- if you really want to be effective in limiting the inflow of immigrants to this country, there is no need to take trips to the border. Patrol the wine industry and it’s consumers, instead. Demand producers to stop demanding cheap labor, demand consumers to stop asking for cheap goods and services. Problems are solved by correcting the cause, not the effect. But then, our collective question: Who’s valiant enough to take up those wine field jobs???? "

" Cheap labor? Enough of that excuse. Heck illegal immigrants are getting wise and now demanding higher pay and pushing such industry as construction to $8.00 an hour. Oh and the 20 state E-Coli outbreak, hmmm how did that happen? Went to Chicago on a business trip CALIFORNIA strawberries $0.99 per pound yet here in Napa??? how much?? Asparagus $4.99 A POUND at Albertsons. Give me a break already. So everyone wants to tell us since 1900 all farming, agriculture and food service has been by illegal immigrants? Consumers are NOT demanding cheap labor, BIG BUSINESS is demanding more profit. Again when I see our local produce cheap in Napa, then we can talk. Excuse me now, I must go get my $4.99 tin of raspberries and $3.99 tin of blueberries. "

" Osvaldo, hospitals around the country and many in the state of California are closing due to bankruptcy from being forced to treat illegal immigrants. Personally I don't care where the money comes from but I do know when someone doesn't pay for services rendered at the hospital (i.e. illegal aliens) the rest of us TAXPAYING CITIZENS who do pay are charged more to make up the difference. Also I have issue with the children of illegals being American citizens. The children should be whatever the status that the parents are. You don't reward illegals for sneaking in and managing to produce a child. That's another way they're managing to bankrupt our state and country. And as far as producing documentation for Medicare/Medicaid I know the dear law abiding hard working folk who follow all of our laws would never stoop to using fake documents. Gimme a break. You can argue until the cows come home, these people cost way more money than they put back into our system. Importing poverty by the millions into our country does not strengthen it, it just burdens us all. "

" You notice here how every story online only gets a few comments except the stories on illegal immigration ? Do you think maybe people are angry and have had enough of our country being used as a safety valve for all of the problems of Latin America ? Here is an interesting fact that no one likes to talk about. Illegal aliens kill 25 AMERICAN CITIZENS PER DAY ON AVERAGE through violent crimes and DUI. Do the math. That is 3 September 11th's a year. Where is the outrage? 28,000 Americans killed since 2003. These statistics were compiled by Congressman Ted Poe of Texas and he quoted them in a speech before our wonderful public servants who are serving us so well. Enough is enough. The internet is a great tool, start doing some research on illegal immigration online and see what is truly going on in our country. "

J. Sawyer wrote on Sep 16, 2006 9:05 PM:

" In response to the article "Napa minute man offers offers tales from the borders" I was shocked to see the statistics. "42,000 employees to secure the border". That's a huge amount of tax dollars. I ask, why does an illegal immigrant risk their lives to come to America? A job right? Well, wouldn't it be simpler to not hire anyone without identification that they are here legally? That we do not provide welfare or access to schools? Now I believe everyone deserves emergent health care regardless of income, status, etc. But how many private businesses hire illegal immigrants and the state does nothing? What's wrong with this picture? "

" It is unfortunate that Mexico is a poor and corrupt country but does that give its people the right to come here to the U.S. and break our laws? When illegals cross the border they know they're breaking the law but justify it because of money. Once here, this lawless attiude continues, with false documents, drunken driving, working underground for cash, and on and on. Being poor doesn't give anyone the right to be lawless, citizen or not. "

" I am willing to pay the extra cash for vegtables, fruits etc. I work for the FD and I do see alot of illegal immigrants (they don't read, write or understand the english language either) that we transport to the hospital(s) for their FREE medical care. How absurd, legal U.S. citizens take a back seat to the illegals and our wonderful politicians don't care, they want the illegal vote ie:california). The insured patients are the ones footing the bill. There are american famlies that are barely getting by because they lost their jobs due to the illegals undercut their bids for the work. How many more police officers must get killed ie:Houston,TX., Aurora,Co., Denver,Co., How many times does an illegal have to be deported before our government takes real action? Lets take our country back! NINGUNA AMNISTIA!!! "

Doug wrote on Oct 3, 2006 9:19 AM:

" Almost a dozen hospitals had to close in the Central Valley of CA., because they never got paid back for medical care to illegals. Sunday night at any local ER you can see them lined up out the door because little Johnny has the sniffles. Serious cases have to wait in line because you don't dare try to jump ahead of little Johnny unless you are bleeding badly or not breathing. That might make you a racist. Don't get me started on the crime in this once small queit town of very little crime. HAH! not now. Kids can't walk the streets anymore. Females better go in groups. Sealing our borders "TIGHT" is the only way to protect everyone. From what I have heard the "Minuteman" fence sounds cheaper to build than anything the Feds can do. Does anyone have any data on this? "

" i agree with keeping illegal immigrants OUT and staying right there and them fixing thier own country instead of coming here where it's a totally different culture, BUT then we have to get our corrupt corporations and corrupt government OUT of mexico and let them rebuild, not to mention help undo a lot of what we've done. If you don't know what i'm talking about you need to do some homework. we dominate economically (and militarily if necessary) the vast majority of everything south of our border and not to their advantage. we bend them over and use them how we see fit. USA out of Mexico and Mexico out of USA please! the transition may be rough but in the end it HAS to be done. "
