Wrong to place No Child blame on a few schools

I am writing to request that your publication correct the erroneous statement made in the Sept. 2 front-page article titled "Schools face No Child sanctions." In the first paragraph of that article, it was stated that the performance of five Napa Valley Unified School District schools "has placed the entire district under sanctions of the No Child Left Behind law." This statement is incorrect.

Angelides is no actor, and Arnold's no moderate

Phil Angelides has a tough row to hoe at the moment. He is just not as telegenic and physically appealing as our current movie star governor and -- in an age when television is the primary medium by which the majority of voters get to know political candidates on the state and national level -- he is clearly at something of a disadvantage.

Readers react to Thompson endorsement

On Aug. 25, the Register published an account ("The GOP Candidate for Congress") of the Register editorial board's meeting with John W. Jones, the Republican candidate challenging Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena in the Nov. 6 election. On Sept. 3, the Register published its endorsement of Thompson ("Re-elect Thompson to Congress"). On Sept. 6, the Register published a reaction from Jones ("Register endorsed wrong guy").

Prop. 90 is an ill, not a cure

In June, Napa County voters rejected a local initiative that would have limited the power of government to make and enforce land use laws.

Dear editor,

Wilderness vs, 'potential'

Dear editor,Whoever coined the phrase, "Like a voice crying in the wilderness," couldn't know that one day this wilderness would disappear. The very essence, the very reason for this loss is exposed in the Sept. 8 Register on the front page. A quote by Napa County Planning Commissioner Terry Scott was, "It represents poor planning to use the land as a winery when it has so much potential."
