Hispanic Networkgears up to dole out scholarships

The Napa County Hispanic Network is preparing to dish out $20,000 in scholarship funds Friday night at its 23rd annual Scholarship Banquet.

This year's event take places at the new Meritage Resort at Napa.

Founded in 1983, the Hispanic Network has awarded $239,000 to 273 students over the years, said Ed Shenk, the president of the group.

Each of the 20 scholarship recipients receive $1,000 to assist with the rising costs of attending college. Shenk, the retired vice president of student services at Napa Valley College, said Latino students face many challenges.

"One of the biggest obstacles is money, financial aid," Shenk said. "I think for some (it's) languages. The other obstacle is family. In the Latino culture, you help out the family. You help support them."

That means many Latino students skip college to enter the work world. But at the same time, Shenk said many Latino parents encourage their children to move on to college for better opportunities and a chance to earn more money.

The scholarship banquet is the Hispanic Network's main event of the year, where the group raises scholarship funds through donations and a silent auction.

While providing scholarships is one goal for the Network, it also partners with organizations such as the city of Napa, St. John's Catholic Church and Napa Valley College to help build bridges between the Hispanic and Anglo communities in Napa.

"The network does have a specific plan," Shenk said. "Our plan is to be a partner with the community. It's not just about scholarships. It's about breaking down barriers."
