For a high school facility that has gotten national acclaim and notoriety, the lighting situation continues to come into question — it’s one of the worst in the area.
The Napa Valley Unified School District needs to address this issue and spend some money on better lights — so that players, coaches, officials and fans can see what the heck is going on, so that they can see the ball when it’s in the air.
If Memorial Stadium is going to be such a special and historical place that the city and community can take pride in, then it’s time for school officials to take the necessary steps to better illuminate the place.
The Napa Gunners, a Napa Valley Soccer Club under-14 Division III boys team, struck again, capturing first-place honors at the Wine Country Classic, which was held over the Labor Day weekend in Napa.

Two goals apiece from Raymond Lopez and Delgadillo, and a goal by Tovar, gave the Napa team a 5-0 win over 49er United Arsena.
The Gunners’ offense and defense combined to provide another strong performance during Game 3, a 4-1 victory over the Eureka Breakers. Delgadillo netted two goals while Tovar and Mitchell Cooledge each added one, with assists from Delgadillo, Tovar and Austin Burns.
The Gunners shut out Napa United in the championship game, 5-0. An all-around team effort led to two goals by Jose Jaramillo, additional goals by Bo Titus, Fabian Izarrerez and Tovar, with assists from Delgadillo and Lopez.
Strong defensive play throughout the tournament was turned in by Jacob Aman, Horacio Arcila, Blake Zuniga, Zachary Zuniga and goalie Fabian Izarrarez.

It was an up and down evening for Napa’s racing dentist, Dr. David Goodwill, in Chico Wednesday night.
Goodwill qualified in the middle of the pack in his Bailey Brothers sprint car. Not satisfied with his performance, Goodwill and his crew went to work on the car.
Goodwill won his heat race handily. All that was left was to win the main event. But that was not to be.
Goodwill was solidly in sixth position when he jumped the berm in turn four. He was able to regain control and re-entered the race well back in the field. He was only able to work his way back to 11th by the checkered flag.

“The Marin County Athletic League looks a bit down this year but even so, Novato may have its best team ever,” said Abend, who lists Novato at No. 2.
Justin-Siena offensive lineman Matt Meyer is listed among the “Just Missed Second Teamers” on the All-Redwood Empire Preseason Team.
