Wild two-point conversion sinks Crushers
By MARTY JAMES, Executive Sports Editor
Vintage High School's season opener Friday night turned into a personal highlight tape for the Crushers' George Emseih.
Emseih, making his Vintage debut, ran a kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. He also returned a punt 85 yards, a school record, to give the Crushers the lead with 8:32 to go in the game. Emseih’s kickoff return is the second longest in school history.
But Montgomery-San Rosa got a late 1-yard touchdown run from Jeff Marks, followed by a wild two-point conversion pass from Fred Duerr to Cameron Loomis, to beat Vintage, 22-21, in a non-league football game at Napa Memorial Stadium.
The Vikings attempted a PAT to try to tie the game, but the snap from center was low.
Duerr picked it up — and after running with the ball for what seemed like an eternity — found Loomis in the end zone to account for the one-point margin of victory.
The game — the first of the year for both schools — was delayed at the start for 30 minutes while workers from the Napa Valley Unified School District repaired a bank of lights at the south end of the field. The game began in near darkness near the south end zone, with the lights finally coming back on at 8:10 p.m.
Vintage trailed 14-0 at halftime, but had its chances in the first half. On their first possession, the Crushers drove from their own 25, but turned the ball over on a fumble at the Montgomery 3-yard line.
Montgomery, which opened the 2005 season with a win over Vintage, took over and drove 97 yards in 10 plays with the series culminating in the Vikings’ second score of the game, an 8-yard run by Bryan Bei, who went in standing up. The drive was kept alive when Vintage, playing the first of five non-league games, was penalized for having 12 players on the field on a punt.
Bei also scored Montgomery’s first touchdown on a run from three yards out. The score was set up by Paul Tedesco’s 64-yard reception from Austin Williams.
Vince Pappas caught an 86-yard TD pass from James Buccellato, Vintage’s second-year quarterback, who completed 12-of-21 passes for 255 yards with no interceptions. He had two passes dropped. Buccellato is listed as one of the “players to watch” in the Monticello Empire League by The Sacramento Bee.
Pappas caught four passes for 114 yards and Emseih, who was shaken up after a catch and had to be helped off the field late in the game, made three catches for 84 yards.
The Crushers, ranked No. 19 in The Bee’s Top 20 to start the season, drove from their own 27 to the Montgomery 41, but turned it over on a loss of downs on their final possession.
From that point, Montgomery ran out of the clock.

The defense also recorded a safety.
