An 18-year-old man was shot to death in west Napa Tuesday evening in an apartment complex parking lot. Napa Police did not immediately release the name of the victim.

Napa Police Cmdr. Steve Potter said police received a report of a shot fired at 5:33 p.m. at the 300 block of Collier Boulevard, a short street that runs between Pine and Elm streets just west of Freeway Drive.
Potter reported that three friends were sitting in a sedan in the parking lot of the apartment complex when the gun went off in the car.

Officers arrived minutes later to discover a young man dead at the scene. Police then called investigators from Napa's Major Crimes Task Force.
The two surviving young men were questioned by police. Their names were not available at press time.

Shortly after the shooting, investigators could be seen placing markers to identify blood drops next to two black sneakers left in an empty parking space. They also took digital photos of two young men hugging each other in grief.
Nearby a woman sat on the hood of a vehicle by police officers and wept. A crowd of dozens of onlookers watched as police turned away a man who demanded to know the condition of the victim.

" People care whether he was illegal or not Javier because of problems in Napa with illegal alien gangs and drug smugglers. Did you read about the multi million dollar drug bust in Napa a few weeks ago? I suppose to be politically correct in today's society we should all just accept the illegal aliens and their crimes. Why should we accept the crimes of people that have no right to be here in the first place ? "

Was it because he was off fighting in Iraq for our country? No....the plain and simple fact was that either he or his "friends" were up to no good.......AKA.....MORONS! And if he is the "outstanding citizen" that everybody refers to him as being.......why would you need to be in a parked car with a gun. Most outstanding citizens that I know were driving home from a hard day's work at that time or doing homework. "

According to his family members, he was born in Berkeley. While we encourage debate on any topic, including immigration, we strongly encourage readers to engage in debate that is constructive, related to the news and based on facts. Creature of the Wheel wrote on Sep 6, 2006 8:45 PM:

" Geez everyone, calm down. I first saw something about this over myspace from a friend of mine and was mistaken about it maybe being another friend of mine named Robert. The victim here wasn't this friend of mine as it turns out but, I still have a degree of empathy for the family. For anyone that has personally attacked the deceased or his family, you are not within your right to do so. You do not know the kid and nobody except the people involved know what the circumstances were. Young people play with guns for any number of reasons. The feeling of power that the gun gives the user. Ask any red, white and blue NRA member about that. Some people like to shoot guns for fun at nothing in general. People use guns for a multitude of reasons, but I think a lot of the youth related deaths in this town come from sheer boredom. After all, we get how many automobile related deaths in this town per year because some bored kid decides to race his import car down a main road in the middle of the night? Nobody attacks those kids or their families because the kid decided to fly down Lincoln avenue doing 120 mph. No. That's a tradgedy in this town. A kid gets shot and he's automatically labeled an "illegal Mexican" and told "good riddance". That's the kind of ignorance I've battled in this town since I moved back in 2001... To further my point, I'm about the most heartless son of a gun when it comes to somebody dying by being stupid. But I'm not feeling that in this case. I don't think that this had anything to do with this kid being an idiot. Knowing Napa the way I do, being born and raised here and also having the opportunity to live just about everywhere else in California within a ten year span, I really think most likely this happened as an accident. And that the victim was only killed because he and his friends were bored and had a gun to "liven up" the evening. There isn't anything to do here in Napa unless you are over 40 and boring yourself or into the wine scene. I'm 25 and caught between the want to do something here and the want to get the hell out of town before I go crazy. Live music might deter this kind of boredom. It's fun, it's cool and the gathering of young people enjoying themselves would be better than a group of 5 kids getting together to get drunk and race cars or play with guns. Napa simply doesn't care about it's youths untill someone gets killed. Then it's a tradgedy for a week and then everyone forgets and the same s#!t happens a month later and it's all a big tradgedy all over again. Either way, everyone have some freaking empathy for the family and the friends of this kid. How would you like it if your kid was accidently killed in an accident like this. Would you call your own kid a moron or a gangbanger? And wash your hands of them for playing with a gun? Bottom line is, S#!t happens. People die for no reason sometimes. Get over it and quit attacking people just because you think you are better. As good of a parent as you might thnk you are, your kid is eventually gonna do something stupid. And if they are lucky they will only get in trouble with the law and not end up on an autopsy table... "

CommonSense Stan wrote on Sep 6, 2006 8:57 PM:

" No one wants to pre-judge this kid who died.Okay.We weren't there but neither were you and to say this kid didn't die because he did something stupid? What could be stupider than playing with a gun because you want "to liven things up"? When you bend over backwards to excuse moronic behavior you condone it in the future. You have no idea what the motives were so think before you write.Playing with guns is moronic,o.k. ? Excusing it is even more so. "
