10 Questions for Doc Lapkin
Each Wednesday the Napa Valley Register's Business Focus features "10 Questions" for a local entrepreneur. Readers are welcome to suggest business people to be profiled.
Three years ago, Alabama native Jim Barner took over longtime Napa business Doc Lapkin Trophy Co.
It was a submarine that brought Barner to Napa originally. Barner and his wife moved to town after he served on the USS Aspro at Mare Island in the 1980s. Barner said the couple always talked of owning a business.
"I'm a firm believer that you really can do anything if you put your mind to it," said the businessman.
What three people would you most like to have dinner with?
Just my dad. He passed away at such a young age, 46 , that I didn't get to spend quality time with him as an adult.
What job would you like to try?I love the ocean, so captain of a boat.
What job would you not like to try?Since I'm scared of heights, anything above the second floor.
What was your first job?Bagging groceries at a Winn-Dixie in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
What's the worst job you ever had?"Gofer" at a wastewater treatment plant in Tuscaloosa.
What is your most treasured possession (besides your family)?Well, that would have to be our pontoon boat, because we spend a lot of family time together on it.
Who do you most admire in the business world?Bill Gates. Talk about a go for the gusto type of person!
Which three Web sites do you have bookmarked or visit regularly?eBay.com, yahoo.com, and doclapkin.com.
What is one necessary extravagance in your life?Family trips to Alabama and vacations to Disneyland and DisneyWorld.
What's something people might be surprised to know about you?I'm a KISS fan - you know, the rock band?
Favorite KISS member: Gene Simmons. Favorite song: "Rock and Roll all Night."
What's your favorite weekend retreat?Lake Berryessa
