Fishing Report

Saturday is one of the annual “Free Fishing Days.” Sept. 23 is the other one. No license required on either day. Gather up the kids and just go do it. Here are some places where you can find some action:

All orchestra of all-stars comes to Copia

Underneath Larry Vuckovich's trademark beret is a head crammed with the names of jazz greats from Vernon Alley to Michael Zisman -- men mostly, whose talent, energy and musical grace inspired generations of young musicians, including one young Montenegrin Serb listening to Armed Forces radio as it drifted into his home in Kotor, courtesy of Voice of America.

Film Fest at the White Barn

The White Barn in St. Helena will host a weekend of classic movies under the stars Aug. 25 - 27. The White Barn Film Fest will also feature live performances, contests, short films, cartoons and a snack bar. The White Barn is an 1872 carriage house converted to a small performing arts hall located at the end of Sulphur Springs Avenue. This intimate setting has nurtured local, Bay Area and international talents for 20 years under the guidance of Nancy Garden.

Bedazzled by 'Broadway'

On Saturday night at the Lincoln Theater, the audience was treated to a fine performance, a musical review titled "Direct From Broadway."

Dreamweavers' apocalyptic 'Rainbow' blends humor with hope

The Rainbow Bar & Grille has seen better days, but this one looks like its last. Something is silently killing off the population of America, without warning or explanation -- the TV runs nothing but "I Love Lucy," and the telephone is dead.

Chilean Octet comes to Napa

Inti-Illimani's Chilean music has intoxicated audiences around the globe for over three decades. The octet will perform at the Napa Valley Opera House on Friday, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 and $35.

Closing weekend brings 30 films to Cartlidge & Browne Winery

Who are the insurgents in Iraq and why do they hate the United States? This question is at the heart of "Retaliation," a 53-minute film that's part of this weekend's Wine Country Film Festival. The festival's closing venue is Cartlidge & Browne Winery, 205 Jim Oswald Way, off of Green Island Road in American Canyon.

Death's-heads and Jolly Rogers are 'the Happy Face of the 2000s'

Back-to-school shopping has always had its hellish side. Who has not left all hope at the door of a department store in August?

Lobster lessons at Copia

In summer months, lobster rolls aren't just a Maine event.

Last-minute lasagna

CONCORD, N.H. -- This is a slap-your-forehead sort of recipe.

Finding the real New England lobster roll: a futile but tasty quest

MASHPEE, Mass. -- Leaning back in his bar stool, the retired postmaster shook his head and jabbed a fork toward the pound of lobster and mayonnaise stuck between bread.

'New' Foodhill Cafe keeps all that made it great -- plus more

Since the early '90s, Foothill Cafe has been providing quality comfort food to hungry Napans and wine country visitors savvy enough to search out the cozy eatery in a neighborhood shopping center.
