NOTES AND QUOTES for a Sunday in the Napa Valley:

Brett Wallace, who was named as an All-American and First-Team All-State player at Justin-Siena High School, enjoyed a productive freshman year of college baseball for the Arizona State Sun Devils, batting .371 with 56 hits, including 11 doubles, seven home runs and 32 RBIs.
Wallace, who helped Justin-Siena to a 97-9 record and three CIF North Coast Section Class A championships in four years, made 38 starts and played in 48 games for ASU (37-21 overall, 14-10 for second place in the Pacific-10 Conference). The Sun Devils’ season came to a close in early June with a 7-2 loss to Baylor during the NCAA Tournament.

The left-handed hitting first baseman spent the summer playing for the Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, one of the top leagues for collegiate players. He batted .248 in 39 games with 36 hits, including seven doubles, five homers and 22 RBIs.
Wallace, selected as the 2005 California Small Schools Player of the Year, broke nine school records at Justin-Siena. He batted .520 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs his senior year as the Braves were 27-0 overall.

The Sonoma resident was selected in the 42nd round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by Toronto, but elected to attend ASU.
Former Vintage High player Ian Hetrick ran for a touchdown and threw for another during the University of Wyoming’s 62-play scrimmage Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyo. Hetrick, who earned All-America, All-State and All-Northern California honors for Santa Rosa Junior College last year, was 2-of-2 passing for 12 yards.

Hetrick, a junior who is from Napa, is competing to become the Cowboys’ backup quarterback. He completed 63.6 percent of his passes and threw for 3,104 yards with 30 TDs last year for Santa Rosa, which won the Producers Dairy Bowl.

Wyoming opens the season Sept. 2 against Utah State.

Kyle Tahsler, a 2004 Napa High graduate and former Solano Community College-Suisun player, is listed as a guard on the Cal State Sacramento offensive line. The Hornets, who took part in their second scrimmage of training camp Saturday, open their season Aug. 31 at Boise State. Sacramento is an NCAA-Division I-AA school for football.

Tahsler was a two-year starter at guard and was selected to the All-Bay Valley Conference team last year for Solano. He was First-Team All-Monticello Empire League at tackle and was honored with an “Ironman” team award at Napa.

Courtney Anderson, who caught 24 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns last year, can be a complete tight end for the Oakland Raiders, coach Art Shell said during the team’s training camp this past week at Redwood Middle School.

“Courtney’s doing well,” said Shell. “He’s improved his blocking. He’s running good routes. Courtney has pretty good hands. He’s a big target, especially down in the red zone.”

Anderson, a third-year player from San Jose State, played in 14 league games, starting 13 of those last year.

The defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Sonoma State men’s soccer team will open the 2006 season with the No. 17 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. The Seawolves finished last season with a 12-9-2 record after rallying to win their first CCAA championship.

Sonoma was ranked No. 21 in the final national poll of the 2005 season.
