Napa Valley Swim Team competes in Junior Olympics

The Napa Valley Swim Team recently sent eight swimmers to compete in Pacific Swimming’s Junior Olympics. The meet, which drew over 1,000 swimmers from Northern California, was held at Independence High School in San Jose. All swimmers attending this meet must have met the Junior Olympic qualifying standards in their events in order to compete.
NVST members qualifying for this event were Elise Roberts, Colby Gibbs, Alli Channels, Olivia Husted, Seth Anderson, Jesse Risinger and Dori Bland.
Roberts, swimming in the 10-and-under girls age group, was outstanding. Roberts swam to a third-place finish in the 50 breaststroke. Her time in the event (40.97) shattered a six-year-old team record (42.69), previously held by Bland and Presley Bard. Roberts earned a new “AAAA” time and a Western Zone Consideration time in the event.
Roberts dropped 41/2 seconds for a best time of 1:32.79 in the 100 breast, earning a fifth place in the event. This time was also a new “AAA” and Western Zone Consideration time. Roberts also competed in the 200 individual medley, earning a new “AA” time and in the 100 butterfly, earning a best time.
Gibbs attended his first Junior Olympic Championships in the 10-and-under boys age group. Gibbs competed in the 50 freestyle (36.07) and 50 backstroke (42.19), earning new “A” times in each event.
Channels had a great weekend in the 11-12 girls age group. Channels swam to a new “AAA” time in the 200 back (2:43.99), placing fifth in the event and dropping 12 seconds. Channels also had a very strong showing in the 100 fly, dropping three seconds to swim a new “AA” time of 1:16.87 and best times in the 50 fly (32.12) and 200 IM (2:49.46). Husted competed in the 50 free (31.72) and had a terrific swim, earning a new “AA” time. Megan Morris competed in the 100 back and 100 free.
Anderson swam to a new lifetime best in the 50 fly (35.24) in the boys 11-12 age group.
Risinger earned best times in the 50 free (28.60), 200 IM (2:34.37) and 400 IM (5:27.74) in the 13-14 boys age group.
Dori Bland had a great weekend in the 15-18 girls age group. Bland placed fourth in the 100 free with a time of 1:02.47, which is a section time. Bland also placed sixth in the 50 free (29.62) and seventh in the 100 breast (1:26.21).

Jessica Clark was 3-for-5 with a two-run triple in the first inning, and Kelly Downing allowed seven hits, striking out six and walking one, to lead Conwell to a win in the senior division of the Napa Valley Girls Fastpitch Association softball playoffs Wednesday night at Kiwanis Park.
The win moves Conwell into the city championship series against Independent Insurance, which begins with Game 1 tonight at 8 p.m., followed by Game 2 Sunday at 6 p.m. If necessary, the series will continue on Monday at 8 p.m.
Downing went 4-for-5 with a double, Melyssa Shroyer was 3-for-4 and Bailey Price was 2-for-4 for Conwell. Jacqueline Zimny, Megan McNay, Rebecca Dyer and Carly Dowis all had one hit.
Krystine Washburn was 2-for-3 with a double and triple, Samantha Scuitto was 3-for-3, Amber Carner had one hit and Nikki Rompel had one hit for Branagan Insurance. Washburn struck out five and didn’t walk anyone.

The Crushers ended their summer season 18-10 overall and 6-4 in the Solano Community College League after Thursday afternoon’s victory.
Sara Zuniga stole the ball at the end of the game to preserve the win.
“All the kids played well,” head coach Dave Hollman said. “It’s been a tremendous improvement. I’m very pleased.”
