Azevedo’s eight Ks leads ‘Hogs
From Register Staff
The Napa Riverhogs, a Junior American Legion baseball team, beat the North Bay Brewers 6-4 on Tuesday at Vintage High School.
Facing a potent North Bay offense, the Riverhogs needed a big performance from their own ace pitcher, Nate Azevedo. He didn’t let them down.
Azevedo pitched a gritty 61/3 innings, giving up only four singles while striking out eight Brewer batters. Thomas Lyall came in to record the final two outs for the save.
Feeding off of Azevedo’s effort, the Napa offense stayed aggressive both at the plate and on the bases. The Riverhogs finished the day with 10 hits and coupled that with smart baserunning, stealing three bases and moving around the basepaths numerous times via wild pitches.
“Anytime a team faces a superior pitcher, there can be a tendency to become complacent and wait for something to happen in your favor,” Napa manager Cam Neal said. “The boys definitely did not allow that to happen this evening. They were fun to watch.”
Leadoff hitter Ethan Speizer had an outstanding day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two triples, three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. Mike Santora continued his hot summer with a 1-for-3 performance with two RBIs, one of which came off of a clutch sacrifice fly. Robbie Steen and Lyall each chipped in two hits apiece, both having a single and a double.
Napa (18-9 overall, 15-5 District 5) finishes off the regular season District 5 league schedule with a home game Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against the Sonoma County Rebels at Vintage.
