Dear editor,

I am writing in hopes that this will be published as a counterbalance to the somewhat stilted coverage afforded to the District Attorney's race in Napa County. I appreciate that your publication has endorsed Gary Lieberstein for re-election, but I would like to take this opportunity to discuss what I believe to be the most important quality of a DA: Character.
Thus far in the campaign Mr. Lieberstein has exhibited a striking lack of professionalism and character. In the Register's article of April 29, you reported that Mr. Lieberstein had published claimed endorsements from individuals that do not support his continued tenure as DA. His response was that he would remove the misappropriated names only if the individuals specifically requested their names be redacted. This is not the character I can support in a position as vital as DA. Political support of a particular candidate should not be an "opt-out system."

Likewise, a true professional has the ability to act with class and integrity when engaging an opponent. Although I was not present at the DA candidate debate at the Yountville Veterans Home May 18, 2006, I understand Mr. Lieberstein did not have the professional character to shake his opponent's hand when offered after the engagement.
I applaud the Register's support of Mr. Lieberstein, but as for myself I cannot support someone with the professionalism and character of a junior high school student for an office as important as district attorney.
