Salmon population on the rise in Napa River

The Napa County Resource Conservation District, under the direction of Jonathon Koehler and Chad Edwardg, has been working on a study of the Napa River for the past several years. Last year the section studied between Oakville Crossroad Bridge and Zinfandel Lane Bridge, a stretch of 4.7 miles, and was a spawning area for Chinook Salmon. In 2004, the survey showed 5.5 salmon per 1000 feet. In the same area in 2005, 11.8 salmon were noted. This is good news as these fish are now spawning in the river. Of special interest in that 4.7-mile stretch, approximately 293 live Chinook salmon were noted with redds or beds. All of this is good news for all of us with the return of our own natural salmon.
