Motorcyclist killed in Trail crash
By MARSHA DORGAN, Register Staff Writer
A Napa motorcyclist was killed on Silverado Trail Wednesday morning when his Harley-Davidson collided with a van.
Timothy Fitzpatrick, 66, was traveling northbound on the Trail, north of Skellenger Lane. The driver of a Chevrolet Ventura van, Linda Grassi, 58, of Napa, was southbound.
The van crossed into the oncoming lane, hitting the Harley, according to CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott.
Grassi suffered a broken right arm and cuts to her legs and arms, according to CHP Officer Jerry Rico.
McDermott said it was not known if the driver of the van suffered a medical problem, or if vehicle speed, alcohol or drugs played a part in the fatal crash.
The impact of the crash threw Fitzpatrick from the bike. He was airborne about 50 feet, landing behind a barbed-wire fence in a nearby field. The Harley came to rest embedded in the embankment. The van ended up on the northbound side of the Trail, with its front end caved in, the driver's door smashed and a flat tire on the driver's side. Grassi had to be rescued out the back window, according to firefighters at the scene. A mangled cargo bag from the motorcycle ended up under the rear of the van.
Ironically, the crash happened across the street from a political billboard stating "Safe Roads Save Lives. Vote yes on Measure H."
This is the third deadly crash on a half-mile stretch the Trail in the past two months. It is the seventh fatal crash in Napa County this year.
