Locals can experience luxury within reach at the Carneros Inn
By KATHLEEN DREESSEN, Register Correspondent
Since opening in 2003, the Carneros Inn has been a magnet for celebrities, high-end executives and others who enjoy the simple life (with style) -- and don't mind paying for it. Set on the hills of the Carneros district, the setting is stunning, with bucolic views of vineyards, horses and farm animals. Resort guests stay in sumptuously appointed "cottages," scattered in little communities around the 27-acre resort.
Until now, Napa locals could experience only a glimpse of the inn by visiting the Boon Fly Cafe, a casual eatery on the Inn's perimeter. That's changed with the introduction of the "Destination Day Spa Package."
"If people order $300 worth of spa treatments, they can have the use of a cottage and all the amenities the resort offers, including the swimming pool, the Hilltop Dining Room, fitness center and concierge services from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday," said Jeannie Jarnot, director of the spa and retail operations. "That's $300 total, not per person, so a couple could come spend a romantic day or three girlfriends could come to relax. The package is an amazing value since these rooms would cost from $375 to $1,200 per day. It's also a fun daylong getaway for a couple with children that doesn't involve hiring a sitter and being away for the night."
Visitors arrive at the reception office situated at the top of a hill. "We call it the 'house,'" said Jarnot of the orange, barn-like structure. "Our neighbors raise farm animals and the horses come up to the fence. In the spa, we have horse cookies and guests enjoy feeding them."
The main lobby, with soaring ceilings and clean lines, is inviting. Guests are seated for check-in and a member of Les Clefs d'Or, the highest level of professional concierge, is ready to address any question. In the living room portion of the building, board games are at the ready.
"People come in and play chess or checkers," explained Jarnot. "We have a library and free DVDs to borrow. After 5 p.m. we light the fire and people enjoy sitting in here with a glass of wine. We also have quarterly writing retreats which are available to non-guests."
Etched faintly into the limestone mantle is the phrase "If you can dream," from the poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling. The father of Keith Rogal, the resort's original developer and still an investor, used to read the poem to him as a boy. The PlumpJack Group, founded by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, has managed the Carneros Inn since 2005.
Across the courtyard from the house is the Hilltop Dining Room, open only to resort guests, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It features beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and has a Carneros-centric wine list. A contemporary, colorful bar is in an adjacent room.
"These areas are available to anyone here for the Destination Day Spa Package," said Jarnot. "People can have lunch or a drink and their charges will be treated just as any resort guest, payable upon checkout."
In summer, the pool and crescent shaped hot tub areas are hopping. Guests lounge on white tufted cushions and are offered frozen grapes as they gaze over the Mayacamas Mountains.
The full-service spa features the Red Flower line of beauty products. Jarnot said the spa is also known for warm goat butter treatments. Goat butter massage treatments range from $65 to $175, depending on length. The goat butter products, made in Sebastopol, are sold in the spa's retail store.
Signature spa treatments are named for five natural elements in the Carneros setting: the Harvests, the Farms, the Minerals, the Cellars and the Flowers of Carneros. "The Farms" features the warm goat butter as well as mustard treatments, while "the Minerals" include stone massages, sea minerals wrap and a rosemary crystal body scrub. Packages are available for various treatments and couples massage is offered ($400 to $450). Massages are also offered in the individual cottages.
"Each spa guest is offered a robe, sandals, a full-length locker and spa amenities. Private areas for men and women have changing areas, rosemary-infused steam rooms and dry saunas. The spa package also includes the use of our fitness room and spa living room area, which has the most comfortable chairs you can imagine."
The 86 cottages, which are actually pre-fabricated mobile homes, a requirement of the use permit, are 476 square feet of luxury. Ten larger suites are also available. Cottages cluster in compounds around a common landscaped area. Each has its own front porch with rocking chair for socializing with neighbors. Guests can opt for ultimate privacy by relaxing in their own fenced garden patio and deck, which includes a gas-fired heater for chilly Carneros evenings.
Inside, the look is modern, featuring French doors and large windows. Polished concrete surrounds a wood-burning fireplace topped by a large screen, flat panel television linked to a DVD player. Ethernet ports, inside and outside, are connected to the Inn's high-speed data network. The king-sized bed is made up with crisp white Italian linens.
But that's not the biggest attraction.
"It's the oversized bathrooms that everybody comments about," said Jarnot. "They love the heated slate floors, the limestone countertops and the soaking tub. The four-head shower is large enough for two and an outside shower allows for alfresco showering. The bathrooms are stocked with Blood Orange bath products by Red Flower."
Construction on Phase Two has begun, which will have an 8,000 square foot Town Center of retail and dining space and 17 two-bedroom cottages. The spa will be enlarged to include custom baths and more outdoor massage areas.
The Carneros Inn currently has a 5,000 square foot meeting space and is available for weddings. One popular spot for weddings and proposals is the apple orchard, with views of vineyards and hills.
"I think it is so romantic to come here for the day, have a couple of spa treatments, order lunch to be delivered to your room and just relax on the patio," said Jarnot. "Or swim in the pool, soak in the hot tub and have our concierge book dinner for you at a local restaurant. What could be a better day in Napa?"
Destination Day Spa Packages are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., (with occasional, limited availability during low season weekends) with a $300 minimum in spa treatments per party. Phone (707) 299-4900 or online www.TheCarnerosInn.com.
