St. Helena, Napa High combine for a 2-for-2 day
The recent weather required Napa High School baseball coach Todd Pridy to perform round-the-clock work on the diamond to have it ready for Saturday’s games that involved his Indians and the St. Helena Saints to take on Truckee.
The two Napa Valley schools made it 2-for-2 against the visiting Wolverines with Napa (5-1) rallying for a 4-3 win in the early game while the Saints (2-0) thumped Truckee 15-1 in five innings.
“The field has taken a beating in the last week or more,” Pridy said. “The way we’ve been getting the weather, there have been enough breaks in between. The big thing is keeping the infield level. It’s taken some work but the outfield is not necessarily in prime playing condition.”
Here’s a closer look at the two games:
St. Helena 15, Truckee 1 (five innings)
Sometimes a lopsided score might lend itself to a team losing concentration. That scenario did not happen, however, for the Saints. St. Helena pitchers Tyler Coon and Derek Hey retired 11 of the last 15 batters they faced and their teammates committed no errors.
“The kids know we won’t let them lighten up without trying to rub it in on anybody,” Saints head coach Joe Densberger said. “We still want to play hard. The whole time you’re on the field you want to play hard and play fair. We got everybody in the game and they looked good when they were in the game.”
Coon pitched the first four innings, giving up just one unearned run. He settled down after an uneven first inning before giving way to Hey in the final inning.
“I went to bed last night thinking we were going to pitch Wilson (Barr),” Densberger said. “Then, I thought, ‘Let’s give Tyler a shot and see what he can do.’ Plus, we’ve got games on Monday and Tuesday. The first inning you could tell that Tyler had a few nerves. Then, he settled down. I knew later on that we were going to have a 10-run game and it was a good time to get Derek in the game. He looks like he’s got stuff that will work.”
Densberger was referring to Monday’s game against Justin-Siena and Tuesday’s contest against Vacaville Christian, both at home.
The Saints sent 11 batters to the plate in a six-run second inning to give St. Helena an 8-1 lead. Jake Holguin’s two-run double, Michael Gastelum’s RBI double and Eddie McMullen’s RBI single highlighted that onslaught.
Holguin (2-for-3, double, three RBIs), Gastelum (2-for-4, double RBI), Eddie McMullen (1-for-1, four runs, RBI), Luke McMullen (1-for-2, double, RBI), Gerry DeHaro (1-for-1, RBI), Hey (1-for-1, double, three RBIs), Coon (1-for-4, two RBIs) and Patrick Lider (RBI) contributed to the Saints’ offense.
Napa 4, Truckee 3
Hayden Campo lined a game-winning two-run single to center field to score Michael Santora, who led off with a double, and pinch-runner John Boyett to lift Napa to a come-from-behind win. Boyett pinch-ran for Ted LeMasters, who singled and stole second, while Chad Albrecht’s walk loaded the bases with no outs.
The win lifted Napa, which won just four games the entire 2005 season, to 5-1.
“We haven’t had a game this tight all year,” Pridy said. “I feel very fortunate that we won this game but at the same time I also think we earned it because we hit a lot of balls at them hard.”
The pitching threesome of Jason Westerberg, David Hagan and Albrecht each performed solidly. Westerberg, who struck out five and walked one, worked three scoreless innings. Hagan worked 2 1/3 innings while Albrecht worked the final 1 2/3 innings. The three pitchers combined to scatter eight hits, strike out eight batters and walk just one.
“That was Jason Westererg’s first outing of the year,” Pridy said. “He’s definitely on a tight pitch count. He throws the ball very well downhill. It’s changing plains and coming pretty good. David Hagan was effective and just needs to work down in the zone a little bit, but it’s good to see him having success. Chad Albrecht is going to be another big arm in what we have to do this year.”
Napa, which visits Armijo Thursday, scored twice in the first inning before Truckee tied the game at 2-2 after six innings and took a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Indians scored their first-inning runs on a Santora RBI single and Campo sacrifice fly.
Santora, Nelson Saldivar and Ryan Kostecka each tallied two hits for Napa. Campo and LeMasters, meanwhile, added one.
