MESA, Ariz. — Carlos Zambrano allowed one hit in three shutout innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the Oakland Athletics 8-7 on Thursday.
Mark Ellis hit a grand slam for Oakland, and Bobby Crosby and Bobby Kielty also homered.

The Cubs took their 5-0 lead against starter Dan Haren. One-out singles by Jerry Hairston, Lee and Aramis Ramirez made it 1-0 in the first inning. Chicago scored four times in the second.
The A’s came back with seven runs in the fifth.

Chicago won it in the ninth when the A’s couldn’t turn a double play on Jose Reyes’ grounder, allowing Angel Pagan to score from third.
