PHOENIX — Ray Durham hit a three-run double during a five-run third inning, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-5 Thursday in the exhibition opener for both teams.
The Giants scored all five runs in the third off rookie left-hander Dana Eveland, who did not retire any of the six batters he faced. Eveland hit his first batter with a pitch and allowed two singles, two doubles and a walk.

The 21-year-old Eveland is one of three pitchers competing for the No. 5 spot in Milwaukee’s rotation.
“He was really hyped up,” Brewers manager Ned Yost said. “He never got in a groove. He was overthrowing and he couldn’t make the adjustment. It’s the first day and it’s tough on the young kids.”

Todd Linden led San Francisco’s 16-hit effort by going 4-for-4 with a walk and one RBI. Mike Matheny added a single, a double and an RBI.
Left-hander Chris Capuano, an 18-game winner in 2005, started for the Brewers and gave up a home run to the first batter he faced, Randy Winn.

The Giants’ center fielder, who signed a three-year, $23.25 million contract extension earlier in the week, smacked a 2-1 fastball from Capuano over the left-field fence.

The Brewers came back with three runs in the second against Giants starter Noah Lowry.

Right fielder Geoff Jenkins, who tied for the National League lead by getting hit by pitches 19 times last season, was nicked on the right hand to start the inning, and Bill Hall followed with a double.

With one out, Corey Hart lifted a two-run double to left that Linden appeared to lose in the sun.

Giants catcher Justin Knoedler capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth off reliever Matt Wise.

“Everybody was a little off today, command-wise,” said Yost, whose pitchers issued five walks.
