Dear editor,

I am writing to express my deep appreciation to State Sen. Wesley Chesbro for his continued support of Aldea’s Art Therapy program and the Art Therapy calendar created from images of the children’s artwork. On Monday, Feb. 6, children who contributed artwork to the calendar traveled to the state capitol where they were introduced on the senate floor by Sen. Chesbro. The children received a round of applause and had their photo taken. A calendar-signing reception followed with many senators in attendance thanking the children for their work. Sen. Chesbro made a special effort to sit and talk with every child as they signed his calendar.
Sen. Chesbro has demonstrated his commitment to the program for many years and has truly come to understand and advocate its importance. He has given the children of Aldea’s Art Therapy program special recognition and a unique venue to showcase their talent.

Art therapy gives children a voice to express a wide range of emotions and helps them work through conflicts and traumas with the guidance of trained therapists. The art in the calendar represents an array of children’s work, from whimsical to evocative. While expressing themselves in this visual way, the children gain a sense of empowerment. Their accomplishments in art therapy also act to help them develop a positive self-image and improve their self-esteem.
Many thanks to Sen. Chesbro, his field representative, Ms. Dawn LaBar, and the California State Senate for their support.

Ron Fredrick
