An alternative to the Super Bowl?
By Register Staff
Are you one of those rare individuals who won't be in front of a television Sunday afternoon? The Lincoln Theater has an alternative form of entertainment planned, with an appearance by Michael Martin Murphey, the singing cowboy poet.
Not only is Murphey the number one, best-selling singer and songwriter of American cowboy music, he's respected singer/ songwriter in the pop and country-western field as well. Although Murphey did have some hit love songs such as "What's Forever For," his biggest hit, "Wildfire," was about a mysterious dream horse on the vast American heartland prairie.
He's a man apart, a man who rides his own trail so resolutely, that the word "rebel" doesn't begin to describe his stance. Although he's remained a life-time resident and loyal son of Texas, he's a man on mystical, spiritual quest to capture the soul of the deserts, plains and mountains of America.
Murphey's close friends are contemporary artists, like William C. Matthews, Amado Pena, Gary Roller and Jerry Riness, and he has worked with artists like John Denver, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson.
As you listen to his music, be prepared to take a ride with a wandering cowboy poet, a musical representative of the Western horseman, rancher and cowboy.
He's also a lover of the outdoors, with a strong commitment to issues regarding farmers and ranchers, open space and management of natural resources.
Tickets for the concert, which begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, are $28, $33, $40 and $45.
For ticket information, contact the Lincoln Theater Box Office, by calling 944-1300 or by going to www.lincolntheater.org or www.ticketweb.com.
The Lincoln Theater is located on the grounds of the Veterans Home in Yountville.
