Flyway Festival events will be held on Mare Island in Vallejo and throughout the North Bay region. Here are a few Napa County outings offered during the festival:

Jan. 27
8 to 10 a.m. -- Ducks, shorebirds, and raptors of American Canyon Wetlands

Led by David Takeuchi, field trip chairman, Napa-Solano Audubon Society. If you are new to birding, you'll learn about ducks, shorebirds, hawks and falcons. If you are a birder, experience another season of bird migration in an expanding wetlands. This is an easy, strolling kind of outing in one of Napa County's best birding spots. Note: there are no public restrooms.
This trip segways into the 10:30 a.m. American Canyon Waste Water Treatment Plant outing (see below).

Directions: From Hwy. 29, turn west onto American Canyon Rd. Meet at the corner of American Canyon Rd. and Wetlands Edge Rd.
Jan. 28

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. -- Tour American Canyon Waste Water Treatment Plant (ACWWTP) and Adjoining Marsh.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the water that goes down your drain? Christina Harsell, Senior Lab Technician at ACWWTP, will take visitors on a tour of American Canyon's state-of-the-art treatment plant, just opened three years ago, to demonstrate what happens to reclaimed waste water and how plants help to clean water. David Takeuchi from the Napa Solano Audubon Society will also lead a walk to the catchment ponds and marsh to view ducks.

Directions: From Hwy. 29 going south, exit on Green Island Road to Merzetta Court. Park in front of the Administration Building.

Guided boat tours of

Napa River Marsh

For a more leisurely bird outing -- and an "embedded" view of birds from the middle of the river -- Napa River Adventures will offer several guided tours aboard an electric-motor launch. Tours cost $40 per person (age 12 and up) and include hot drinks. Reservations are required. For launch schedule and more information, visit www.napavalleybirdwatching.com, or call (707) 224-9080.
