Taste of the valley

Filippi's is open

A sun-baked treat for winter nights

Now that the holidays are over, how about giving yourself a present? This weekend, visit the nearest good wine store and buy a bottle of Cote-Rotie, from the northern part of the Rhone Valley of France. You won't find this everywhere, and it will probably cost around $50, but you've earned it. Prepare a big meal, let the wine breathe a little, pour, drink -- and, finally, relax. The presents are open; the relatives are gone. This is your time.

Then the storms of December kept the yield low -- the Friday before Napa's New Year's Eve floods, reports had it that no fresh Dungeness crab was to be found anywhere in Napa.

Building a cozy Napa granny unit takes time and planning

When Suzanne Shiff announced her plan to replace the ramshackle shed in her Old Town Napa backyard with a one-bedroom rental cottage, her friends were skeptical. After all, the space was tiny, she was on a tight budget and aren't planning departments notoriously inflexible?
