Braves fall to 6-5 in close loss

Justin-Siena’s varsity boys basketball team dropped to 6-5 overall on Thursday night in a 44-45 loss to Palma High. Kevin Dougherty led the Braves with 11 points and Cole Thompson picked up 10 points. Stephen Dane picked up seven rebounds while Thompson added five steals and Guiles Particelli had four assists.
Justin-Siena hosts Fort Bragg today at 6 p.m.

• Anderson 47, Napa 46
The Indians took a rough loss in the third round of the Don Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic High School on Thursday afternoon. It was a close game in the first two quarters, tied 27-27 at halftime but Anderson came away with a 39-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter and maintained its momentum to overpower Napa in the final seconds.

Josh Ohlandt played his best game of the year against Anderson’s six-foot, 10-inch center. Ohlandt had 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Ryan Kostecka also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points. Scott Pressley played well defensively and dished out three assists.
Napa drops to 3-8 overall and continue play today in the tournament.

“We got a good overall effort from the kids, just came up short in the fourth quarter,” Napa head coach Mike Warrington said.

• Bethel 66, Vintage 64

After being down 47-30 at halftime, the Crushers came back but not quite far enough to lose in the second round of the Elsie Allen Lobo Slam on Thursday afternoon. Kip Kendall and Ryon Dudley led Vintage with 21 and 20 points respectively while A.J. Eisiminger picked up 13 points.

The Crushers play the loser of Thursday night’s Petaluma/Calistoga game today at 2 p.m. for seventh place.

Prep Girls Basketball

• Napa 59, Franklin 47

The Napa High varsity girls basketball team earned a win in the first round of the Folsom Tournament on Wednesday night. The Indians were led by Nicoletta Geyer with 18 points. Heather Gunderson added 11 and Lindsey Dreher had 10. Katie Keilig chipped in eight and Karyn Franco had six points. Emily Baraff, Vanessa Priest and Brittany Barbos each added two points.

• Justin-Siena 68, San Rafael 31

The Braves jumped to 9-2 overall with their Thursday night win at the Sand Dune Classic at St. Ignatius to earn them a spot in the consolation championship tonight at 7:45 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s Terra Linda/Lowell matchup.

Vicky Deely led Justin-Siena with 22 points and eight rebounds while Kyleigh McAhren and Jessica Futo both picked up nine points. McAhren also grabbed five rebounds and three steals. Laura Arbios and Courtney Heathcote each added seven points while Britney Hyatt had six assists and Arbios chipped in three.

JV Girls Basketball

• St. Pats 46, Justin-Siena 39

Olivia Vera and Natalie Straw led the Braves with 12 points each while Ira Lopez added 11. Justin-Siena is now 6-5 overall.

Freshman Girls Basketball

• Justin-Siena 27, Vintage 24

The Braves have now won four of their last five games and are on a three-game winning streak as of Thursday night. Justin-Siena was led by Ali Bassett with 14 points and three rebounds. Emily Galles and Shelly Tolbert both added four points while Galles picked up five steals and Tolbert had two assists.

Michaela Hamilton had two points and five boards while Stephanie Herwatt had four steals and two rebounds and played a great defensive game.

Justin-Siena is now 6-5 overall.
