The sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a Yountville man Sunday has been identified as Jerry Bohlander, sheriff's Capt. John Robertson said.

Bohlander shot Samuel Paul Rodriguez, 41, after Rodriguez came at him with a kitchen knife early Sunday morning at the Gateway Mobile Home Park on Washington Street in Yountville. Bohlander was responding around 1:30 a.m. to a report of man yelling in the area.

Bohlander has been with the department for a little more than a year, Robertson said. He is on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice when an officer is involved in a shooting while on duty. Bohlander will remain on leave until the investigation into Rodriguez's death is complete.

Bohlander found Rodriguez outside one of the trailers, armed with the knife. He ordered him numerous times to put down the knife. When Rodriguez approached him with the knife raised, Bohlander fired one shot, hitting Rodriguez in the chest. He was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Detectives do not know why Rodriguez was yelling. A resident at the mobile home park said she heard him outside yelling, "Help me. Please help me." The resident said she saw Rodriguez and he did not appear to be hurt. Robertson said so far, no one they have interviewed heard any disturbance prior to Rodriguez's yelling.

Rodriguez was visiting his elderly father, who lives in the mobile home park.

In September 2004, Rodriguez was arrested for assaulting his father. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and was given three years formal probation and ordered to not to live with his father. "If he was living with his father and not just visiting, he would have been in violation of his probation," Robertson said.

Robertson said investigators will have to wait until they receive the results of toxicology tests taken during Rodriguez's autopsy to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol the night he was killed.

On June 13, Rodriguez was arrested for violation of probation and being intoxicated, Robertson said.

This is the first officer shooting in the sheriff's department since February 2003. Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Foster responded to a fight involving six men at the Canyon Creek subdivision in American Canyon.

Foster ordered the men to stop fighting. They did not comply, and Foster was forced to pull his baton. During the melee, Foster was tripped and knocked to the ground. He lost the baton, which could have used a weapon to assault him.

The men continued to come at Foster. Fearing for his safety, Foster pulled his gun and shot Pedro Jaramillo, 33, in the abdomen. Jaramillo recovered from his wound. He was arrested for felony battery against a peace officer, felony obstruction of a peace officer in the line of duty and public drunkenness.
