Police make arrests in WalMart theft
By MARSHA DORGAN, Register Staff Writer
A Napa man was carted off to the county jail after he allegedly helped himself to about $400 worth of merchandise at Wal-Mart on Lincoln Avenue and left without paying for it, according to police.
Travis Robert Nance, 22, was seen leaving the store on Sunday by store security, Napa Police Sgt. Don Honey said.
After struggling with security guards in the parking lot, Nance was able to get away, Honey said.
Police spotted him hiding under a parked car on Jordan Lane, near Wal-Mart, a short time later. Nance still wasn't ready to throw in the towel. He wrestled with police until he was restrained after a dose of pepper spray, Honey said.
After he was taken into custody, officers discovered Nance's family member had reported Nance took his car without his permission, Honey said.
Nance was arrested on suspicion of robbery, auto theft and resisting arrest.
In a separate incident on Monday afternoon police arrested Allan Sanchez after Wal-Mart clerks allegedly spotted him opening CDs and DVDs with a razor blade, Honey said.
Sanchez allegedly left the store with the CDs and DVDs without paying for them, he said.
Sanchez, 20, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Mystery explosion
Police and firefighters have no explanation for an explosion early Sunday morning which was heard and reported by numerous Napa residents.
"We heard the noise about 4:15 a.m. It woke us up at the fire station," said Napa Fire Battalion Chief Callanan, who was at the fire station at Seminary and First streets.
"We thought it was paper rolls rolling off the truck at the Register parking lot. We checked and found that wasn't the case," Callanan said. "We drove around looking for anything that might have caused the loud noise, but found nothing."
