AmCan official lacks

basic respect for residents
Dear editor,

A few weeks ago, I commented on the disrespect that was shown to now retired city employee Bob Schwerin, by American Canyon Councilwoman Luporini, when she turned her back to him and refused to shake his hand when he was awarded a City Proclamation during a city council meeting.
After my editorial appeared in the newspaper, exposing her action and calling for an apology to Mr. Schwerin and to her electorate, I expected Mrs. Luporini to repent of this indiscretion, do just that, and apologize. So I tuned in to the Nov. 17 city council meeting on Channel 28 and to my utter disbelief, witnessed her sit there and conduct the business of our city without any remorse for her lack of respect for another human being or the city of whom she represents.

Let me now advocate for a change in the charter and call for the election of a mayor and vice mayor by the ballot of the citizens of American Canyon. It is time for us to elect people to office based on their ability to lead, their obvious and demonstrated actions of integrity and respect for other human beings. I am calling also for the City Council to rescind their election of Mrs. Luporini as vice mayor and at least retain Councilman Garcia as our vice mayor.
We are not the sleepy little town we once were, and we have issues that need the attention of people who can work with the county and the rest of the valley, without inciting and inflaming division within our town over issues like "retail discrimination" and people who will stop the perpetuation of the "Hatfields and McCoys" attitude that keep us from taking our rightful place as the second largest city in the county.

There are issues in our town dealing with water, transportation and land use that have legitimate cause for concern and we must now as citizens take control and responsibility of these issue and more, and elect people based on their ability rather that their popularity or personality. It is time for a change!
