Three homeless after mobile home fire

An early morning mobile home fire on Monday has left three people homeless.
The fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. at 10 Newell Circle in north Napa. One of the male occupants was awaken by a crackling noise and investigated, said Napa Fire Capt. Sharon Quick. The man came out of his bedroom and saw an orange glow and that the hallway was burning, Quick said.
"He was able to escape the mobile home through a nearby door and alert another person who was sleeping in a shed adjacent to the trailer," Quick said.
The third resident was not home when the fire started.
One of the male occupants suffered minor burns and was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital, Quick said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The fire threatened nearby structures, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze, and had it extinguished by 1:45 a.m.
Napan arrested in DUI crash
Jose Manuel Lopez was arrested after his Acura crashed into a Nissan Quest on Sunday, injuring all five occupants, one seriously.
The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Silverado Trail, south of Oakville Cross Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Lopez, 23, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on suspicion felony DUI.
He was northbound on the Trail when his Acura crossed the double-yellow lines directly into the path of the Nissan, which was southbound, the CHP said.
Although the driver of the Nissan, Catherine Giblin, 36, of San Jose, tried to avoid the crash, the Acura hit the left side of Nissan, shearing off the passenger door of the vehicle. Elizabeth Carpol, 59, of Pacific Palisades, was thrown from the Nissan and suffered major head injuries, the CHP said.
She was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where she was in critical condition, according to a hospital spokesman.
James Giblin, 32, Ronald Carpol, 67, and a 2-year-old boy, all passengers in the Nissan, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital.
Assault arrests
Juan Antonio Mesta, 45, of Calistoga, was taken into custody early Sunday after a woman accused him of slapping her in the face, causing minor injuries, according to Calistoga police.
The couple was arguing about family matters, police said. The assault happened on Briana Street in Calistoga.
Mesta was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence.
Later on Sunday, Carl Edward Bishoff, 53, of Napa was arrested on felony battery.
A Napa woman told police Bishoff threw items at her during an argument and hit her in the face, police said. The incident happened in the 2200 block of Redwood Road.
Motorcycle crash
Christopher Koskinen, 31, of American Canyon, suffered major head injuries when he crashed his motorcycle on Soscol Avenue early Sunday.
Koskinen was riding his bike southbound on Soscol Avenue, south of Kansas Avenue, when the bike hit the center divider, tossing him from the motorcycle, police said. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
At this point, police do not believe alcohol played a part in the crash.
Big rig versus pickup
A tractor-trailer truck attempting to make a left turn onto Highway 29 in Calistoga broadsided a pickup. the driver was taken to a Santa Rosa hospital said Calistoga police.
Frankie Gill, 26, of Calistoga was airlifted to the hospital. The accident happened around 7 a.m. Monday.
The driver of the big rig, Robert Gunthrie, 28, of Ohio, was not hurt.
Other arrests
Jonathan David McCurdy was arrested Saturday night when he allegedly went on a rampage, throwing bricks, police said.
Police responded to a call of a man throwing rocks at a car and at a business on Lincoln Avenue. When they arrived they discovered McCurdy, 18, had allegedly thrown a brick at a car, which ricocheted, shattering the window of the business, police said.
McCurdy was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism and resisting arrest.
Shoplifting arrests
On Sunday afternoon, police responded to Home Depot in South Napa Marketplace to arrest an accused shoplifter. Store security told police Arturo Rodriguez, 21, of Napa had concealed merchandise under his clothing and left the store without paying for it, police said.
When security confronted Rodriguez outside the store he allegedly punched them, police said.
Rodriguez was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and misdemeanor battery.
Also Sunday afternoon, Elizabeth Rose Stone, 18, was taken into custody for allegedly taking items from Target in the South Napa Marketplace, police said.
Once outside the store, Stone fought with security guards, who were able to restrain her until police arrived.
Stone, 18, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of robbery.
