On the march

Napa High's football team made an impressive march to Memorial Stadium for its MEL playoff game last Saturday -- heralded by the Napa High marching band playing its dauntless "Warpath."
"I think this team is just kind of close to the band," one band member said. "When we went to Vacaville, (the football team paid for the buses to take the band to that game) after the game, the team came over to high-five the band. S It's pretty neat to be a cool band."

Napa's marching band will next appear at the Oakland holiday parade Dec. 3.
The Vintage Marching Band will be in the upcoming Napa holiday parade on Saturday and at the instrumental music department's Holiday Concert Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m., at the District Auditorium on Jefferson Street. The concert also features the Vintage High School Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and Advanced Band

This will be their last performance before heading out on Dec. 27 to perform at the New Year's Day Parade in London.
Tickets are $7 general admission and may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the VHS Music Office at 299-2520.

Unique handcrafted items including jewelry, candles, scrapbooking and cards will be for sale at a Christmas Boutique on Dec. 3 at 1901 Waverly St., in Napa from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The Napa Valley Art Association will hold their monthly meeting on Nov. 28th at 1 p.m., at 1520 Behrens St. Napa.

The demonstrating artist will be the talented Beverly Wilson, who is well known for her colorful oils of vineyards and farm workers. Drawn to the themes of everyday country life, she is able to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary with her vibrant use of color and bold compositions. Wilson studied under Diebenkorn in the early 1970s at UCLA and under his tutelage developed a unique style of her own. After earning her BFA, she spent a year traveling through Tuscany and Umbria, Italy, selling her sketches and became interested with the tranquil life of the wine country. She has lived in Napa since 1983.

The public is invited to attend the meeting. There is a $3 fee for non-members, payable at the door. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please call 265-9050.

Peter Menzel and Faith D'Alusio's new book "Hungry Planet: What the World Eats" was launched on Nov. 1 and is in bookstores now and getting great reviews. Some of the work was included in a show by the same name earlier this year at Copia. This expanded version of the show includes essays in addition to the fascinating photos showing what families eat in one week all over the world, from American Canyon to Greenland, Bhutan to Mali.

Menzel and D'Alusio will be doing two book store events in Napa on Dec. 3: at Bookends Book Store, 1014 Coombs St., 2-3 p.m. and at Copperfield's Books, at Bel Aire Plaza for a slide lecture and book signing from 6 to 8 p.m.

San Francisco's largest fine arts and crafts show -- dedicated to celebrating and promoting 160 of the West's finest arts and crafts people -- opens at Herbst Pavilion on Dec. 2. Holiday shoppers are invited to find perfect, one-of-a-kind gifts at this special three-day showcase that features fine ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, painting, photography, blown glass, decorative and wearable fiber, leather, woodworks, metalworks and mixed media. The artists and craftspeople, whose art can only be found in galleries, will be available throughout the show to discuss their work and passion for their craft.

The fair takes place Dec. 2 from noon to 7 p.m., Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Herbst Pavilion, Fort Mason in San Francisco. Admission is $6 per person; children under 12 admitted free.
