Congregation Beth Sholom presents the award-winning film "The Ritchie Boys" Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. 1455 Elm St., in Napa.

Directed by Christian Bauer, "The Ritchie Boys" is a Canadian/German film about young, Jews who, as teenagers, escaped the Nazis, leaving their families behind. Because of their German language skills, they trained in intelligence work and psychological warfare, and returned to Europe as U.S. soldiers. They called themselves "The Ritchie Boys" after their training camp, Camp Ritchie, Md.

Bauer tells a story that's never been told before. It begins in Camp Ritchie, the birthplace of modern psychological warfare, and it ends with the defeat of Germany in May 1945. After D-Day, the Ritchie Boys became a decisive force in the war. Nobody knew the enemy, its culture and language better than they. Their mission: gather intelligence from behind enemy lines and as interrogators as the Allied armies moved east through France and into Germany. Many of the Ritchie Boys reflect on their roles in defeating their homeland, the risks that they took for their new country, and the humor that kept them sane during a time of war. The 90-minute film is in English and German with English subtitles. This event is free to the public.
