Quick security thwarts alleged attack at NSH
By MARSHA DORGAN, Register Staff Writer
A Napa State Hospital patient was booked into county jail and charged with the attempted rape of a female hospital employee.
At 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, Raymond Reid, 20, grabbed the woman while she was counseling him in one of the hospital's units, and carried her into a residential room where he attempted to sexually assault her, Napa State Hospital spokeswoman Lupe Rincon said.
The woman made noises to alert other staff members, who responded immediately and pulled Reid off the victim, Rincon said.
Rincon said all staff members wear a personal alarm, which sets off a security alarm in the unit when triggered. Another staff member, who witnessed the alleged assault, set off her personal alarm.
Reid has been at the state hospital for six months as a civil commitment, meaning he is under the care of the hospital because he cannot provide for himself and could be a danger to others and to himself.
The victim was provided post-trauma counseling by state hospital counselors and "is home at this time," Rincon said Wednesday afternoon.
Bicycle stop nets suspected meth
Deputies stopped a man riding a bicycle late Tuesday evening in the parking lot of the Napa Premium Outlets on Freeway Drive.
The man consented to let the deputies search him, according to American Canyon Police Sgt. Craig Nickles.
During the search, deputies found Donald Garza of Napa to be in possession of three baggies of suspected methamphetamine and a smoking pipe, Nickles said.
Garza, 40, was arrested on suspicion of possession, transportation and sale of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burglary arrests
Around 4 a.m., Wednesday, police spotted two men walking northbound on River Glen Drive. After talking to Charles Guttenbeil and Joel McQueen, they discovered Guttenbeil to be in possession of car keys belonging to a Volvo that was reported stolen from San Bruno on Tuesday, Napa Police Sgt. Don Honey said.
Officers also found stolen property in the Volvo, which was parked nearby. The items included a camera cell phone with Guttenbeil's picture on it, Honey said.
Guttenbeil, 21, of Sacramento, and McQueen, 27, of East Palo Alto, were arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property. Guttenbeil was also booked on violation of parole.
