Grace Ferguson is my hero

Dear editor,

As we are faced with daily reminders of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Katrina, our hearts and prayers go out to all of the victims.
Eventually the heartbreaking stories will be replaced with chapters of courageous heroes.

This is by no means to take away from all the professionals and everyday civilians who have been on location for the past month assisting the victims of Katrina.
Those who put aside personal differences and united as one, as a nation, we are in awe of your generosity and commitment.

However, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize one of my special volunteers. You see, this person is very special to me. When tragedy struck, she immediately joined the Red Cross and headed to the center of the devastation, Alabama and Louisiana to assist in any way. It takes a unique individual to just pack your bag and head on out to help others without any hesitation.
I did not want this unselfish deed to go without notice. This person truly showed us all her strength, courage and spirit, in a time of need. And we, as a family, are much stronger from her actions.

I'm proud to say she is my big sister, Grace (Chela) Gonzalez Ferguson, but most importantly she is my hero.
