Vallejo man dies in crash
A Vallejo man was killed early Friday morning when his vehicle plowed into an oncoming vehicle. Shaun Lee, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene around 4:30 a.m.
Lee was traveling westbound on American Canyon Road.
He his Honda around a corner too fast and lost control, California Highway Patrol Officer Steven Hawkinson said.
The Honda went sideways into the oncoming lane and crashed into an eastbound Cadillac driven by Dennis Luddy, 46, of Fairfield, Hawkinson said.
Luddy suffered a broken nose and crushed ribs, he said. He was taken by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Hospital.
This is the fourth fatal accident in Napa County this month. There have been a total of 23 traffic fatalities this year.
Auto theft arrest
It was a case of being in the right place at the right time.
Two Napa sheriff's officers were driving on Thompson Avenue when they heard the description of a stolen car broadcast over the police scanner on Thursday afternoon. At that moment, the sheriff's officers spotted a car matching the description of the stolen vehicle parked on Thompson Avenue.
The car had been reported stolen from First Street in Napa a short time before, Napa Police Sgt. Pat Manzer said.
The sheriff's officers stopped in front of the stolen vehicle. The driver of the stolen car drove off and the sheriff's officers followed, Manzer said. They followed the car to Congress Valley Road and onto Buhman Avenue.
At that time the driver of the stolen car realized he was being followed. He stopped behind a barn and ran on foot. The sheriff's officers chased after him and took him into custody and released him to the custody of Napa city police.
Walter Alan Gschwend, 40, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of felony auto theft, misdemeanor reckless driving and violation of parole.
Beer heist
Joseph Richard Dimiceli was arrested Thursday afternoon after he allegedly snatched a case of beer from Napa Food Center on Kilburn Avenue and tried to make a run for it, according to Sgt. Pat Manzer.
The clerk foiled the alleged theft when he caught up with him and the two struggled. Police arrived and took Dimiceli into custody.
Dimiceli, 23, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary, committing a felony while out on bail and violation of probation.
Lights on
The rainy season is here and it's time to not only turn on the windshield wipers, but the headlights as well.
A new law that went into effect July 1, requires motorists turn on the vehicle lights when the wipers are working.
Napa police officers will be enforcing the law, according to Sgt. Don Honey.
"We will be giving warnings at first, but eventually we will be citing drivers," Honey said.
Honey also encourages motorists to prepare for the bad weather by checking their tires, wipers, slowing down and keeping a safe distance from the car in front.
Burn ban lifted
The 2005 fire season will end on Monday.
Residents no longer need to obtain a burn permit in the areas patrolled by the California Department of Forestry.
CDF officials recommend residents check with their local fire district and Air Quality Management District to determine if there are any burn restrictions.
